A good movie, but..., 5 Dec 2002
Now, don't get me wrong. If I was rating this DVD on its own merits, I'd give it at least 3 stars. Even the way it is in the UK, it's a very entertaining movie with great animation, a great story, and (dare I say it) some pretty good acting.
However, the UK release of this movie just isn't worth it. It only contains the English dubbed version, and it's cropped to 4:3 (fullscreen) from the original 1.85:1 widescreen aspect ratio, so part of the picture is missing on both sides. In the US there are two versions available - a "Cardcaptors the Movie" DVD which is similar to this one, and a "Cardcaptor Sakura the Movie" DVD which is in the original aspect ratio and contains the Japanese AND English versions with subtitles that can be turned on and off. (As a side note, ALL the versions of this movie are uncut apart from cropping in the 4:3 version and dialogue changes in the dub, so you don't have to worry about the version with both languages having objectionable content that isn't in the English-only version.)
Because of the aspect ratio issue, the UK version isn't really the one you want even if you only plan on watching the dub, and if you're an anime fan who likes to watch the original version rather than just a parent buying it for their kids, you _definitely_ don't want the UK version. If you have an R1-compatible player, go for "Cardcaptor Sakura the Movie".
