5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of songs, 16 Dec 2013

I have loved Quilter's songs for many years and this volume of 55 of them is excellent value for money. The script is really clear and easy to read and at this price it's a volume that any singer/singing teacher should have in their collection.

I really enjoyed this book, one you can dip into and return to whenever you want. Some really interesting ideas and some surprising thoughts from singers of the past. Anyone interested in singing as a perfromer or as a listener would find it fascinating: I did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Most enjoyable., 6 Nov 2012

At a bargain price for 2 CDs this is an excellent version of Dvorak's great choral work. I really liked the orchestral and choral sound , the excellent soloists and a conductor who, for me, catches the right moods and speeds to make for a good listening experience. You won't go far wrong with this recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great insight., 6 Nov 2012

A most enjoyable read exploring the composer's life and creative process in much detail. With the centenary anniversary of Britten's birth coming up, this would be a great way to refresh or stimulate interest in his music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable!, 6 Nov 2012

A splendid version of this great piece of English choral music (Hymnus Paradisi) Lovely orchestral and choral sound with soloists that sound at ease and very "English" in the best sense of the word. If you don't know the piece, try it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!, 6 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I found this a most disappointing recording. Although it has a distinguished conductor and performing forces I felt the speeds, virtually of all the movements too fast for comfort, and certainly too fast for some of the soloists. If I had not previously known the work, I would not have realised what a great piece it is from this recording where I would have dismissed it after one hearing. Try the Kubelik recording for a much more satisfactory reading: now this to me is how the work should sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Madama Butterfly, 5 Sep 2011
I can honestly say that I really enjoyed the whole of this recording. Both Kaufmann and Gheorghiu are magnificent, the supporting singers are all splendid and the orchestral playing superb under the baton of Antonio Pappano. You will not be disappointed in this recording if you already enjoy the vocal qualities of Kaufmann and Gheorghiu, and I realise that that is an individual choice.

Am thouroughly enjoying the book, great story, great characters and a great insight into life in the 14th century. I wholeheartedly recommend it. I really don't want this book to have an end!

5.0 out of 5 stars Joy to the World, 22 July 2009
I had a record of this many years ago and loved the compilation. It's really good to have it now as a CD. The title is well justified, the music is full of joy, sparkle, nostalgia and Joan Sutherland's inimitable voice. Just the sort of music to hear around the Christmas season.
