5.0 out of 5 stars A Discovery Of Witches, 1 Feb. 2012
I love to read and very few books have caught my attention like this one, and i eagerly await the second in the series. Other reviews may say that it meanders and talks a lot about yoga and wine but what you have is pure sensual seduction of the senses. Matthew is after all a vampire and to him smell and taste are the ultimate weapon in both war and love. He is a vampire I WOULD like to meet on a dark night. Anne Rice has made both vampires and witches seductive and interesting with the Vampire Chronicles and the Mayfair Witches and this book by Deborah Harkness carries on that tradition in fine style with a slightly more homely view of witches that makes you want them living next door. The search for the lost book, the trouble that is caused when a witch and vampire fall in love and feuds going back centuries just add to the charm of what i hope will be an excellent trilogy. Can hardly wait till July to read then next one and its already on my wish list

5.0 out of 5 stars The Lipstick Trick, 30 Oct. 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Okay I admit it, I was an eighties kid, and this was a classic eighties movie. If you ever watch a programme about the eighties, this film is always mentioned or the Molly Ringwald dance scene is shown. Plus the fact many a girl spent hours learning how to do the lipstick trick after seeing the film (trust me - I speak from experience) but I won't spoil it by telling you. You'll have to watch it to see what I mean.

If you want to bring back memories of teen angst, and all that went with it. Or if you want a classic for your collection - You just got to get it

5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest of Queens, 30 Oct. 2007
This review is from: Elizabeth [DVD] (DVD)
With the sequal to this due out soon, I only hope they manage to capture the stunning atmosphere of the original film.

Dark and full of intrigue is the world in which the young princess Elizabeth becomes Elizabeth the first. This girl thought up the concept of GIRL POWER.

Magnificent is Geoffrey Rush as her faithful advisor Walsingham, whose sole meaning in life is to protect his queen.

What I wonder would her children have become if she had married, but that we shall never know. A MUST SEE film, great for those studying the period or just for entertainment (although don't expect any laughs)

The Autobiography Of Henry VIII
The Autobiography Of Henry VIII
by Margaret George
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars He wasn't as bad as you might think, 14 Sept. 2007
Did you know that Henry wrote the music of Greensleeves. That he loved music and sport, poets and artists. Okay yes he did marry a few times but he had a lot of people whispering in his ear stirring up trouble as well. Katherine his first wife adored him until her death. Anne Boleyn was evil and out for what she could get and that was the crown itself. Jane Seymour he loved more than life, Catherine was a spoilt child with no morals. Anne Of Cleeves actually became his beloved sister when the marriage was anulled and his last wife outlived him. So he actually only executed two wives and with good reason as you will see when you read this book.

Will Somers his court fool was a true friend to Henry I think, and one of the few he really had.

A great man whose reputation has become tarnished through rumour and propaganda over the years. Read this book and understand what he was truely like. You may find you actually like him.

The Memoirs of Cleopatra
The Memoirs of Cleopatra
by Margaret George
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Cleopatra lives, 14 Sept. 2007
This book is truly amazing. You feel as if you are actually inside the head of this amazing woman. It's no wonder the romans tried to poison us against her throughout history. She was clever, intelligent and loved those around her. Little wonder that men fell under her spell as soon as they met her.

As a work of fiction it's the kind of book you pick and just can't put down. Margaret George very carefully researches her material and it shows, mixing a blend of historical fact with perhaps a little bias. Strange though that her tomb which stood in the centre of Alexandria and contained both her and Mark Anthony has so completely vanished and no trace of it has ever been found. I also agree with her physician Olympus, had her eldest son been allowed to live, what wonderful things he may have done with parents like Cleopatra and Ceaser. This we shall never know or find out the fate of her other children by Marc Anthony.

If you plan to go off on holiday soon, take this book and become lost in an ancient world. If you stay at home, curl up on the sofa read this book and be transported.
