5.0 out of 5 stars The man and his music coming beautifully to life, 3 Dec 2013

This review is from: Britten (Paperback)
For any one who does not want to read five hundred-plus pages about Britten and the minutia of his existence but looks for the equation of the composer's life and his music, this is a wonderful read. Only a fellow composer and a friend who loved his music could have written a book about Britten's musical development of such compression and empathy. ElL

Dawning of the Raj: The Life and Trials of Warren Hastings
Dawning of the Raj: The Life and Trials of Warren Hastings
by Jeremy Bernstein
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars A timely rehabilitation, 21 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book by Jeremy Bernstein's is a lively and fascinating account of Warren Hastings' life and the way the British added India to the jigsaw of the Empire. Warren Hastings was one of the few enlightened colonial governors, who paid dearly for his empathy toward the people under his rule and the loyalty toward his country. Returning from India he faced defamation, vicious personal attacks and a public trial which, after seven gruelling years, had to acquit him. This book is a welcome and timely contribution to the rehabilitation of a man who never was awarded a title and who, even now, does not seem to have fully escaped of the shadow of his trial.
