5.0 out of 5 stars ROCKPORT PEAKVIEW WATERPROOF BOMBAY CHUKKA ARE THE BEST BOOTS YOU CAN BUY!, 5 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The best boots I've ever had. I have just about worn out my first pair after a year of heavy use, and just bought 2 more pairs. The laces will not last 2 weeks but the boots are tough and comfortable. Get some. I have had similar Rockport shoes and boots, and all are excellent, but these are like a luxury 4x4 in the shoe world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Burt In His Own Words!, 28 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not what I thought it was going to be, this is a fine book, featuring chronological conversations with Burt, and quotes from the significant other people through his life. It certainly isn't tipped in Burt's favour, it is pretty honest and shows him as a dedicated artist, to the detriment of most other things in his life, but always straight up and exactly what I never thought he would be like. Not as much skiing as I thought, but more than most songwriters do. He still cannot explain what made him such a unique and popular composer, other than hard work, which is a useful bit of advice for every aspiring writer waiting for inspiration. Sometimes dark and tragic, sometimes amazing in Burt's attitude and vocabulary. You gotsa buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice book, more Kalamazoo content needed! (for me), 28 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you already have the 1995 Walter Carter Epiphone book, you may not need this, and may want to browse through it before buying. I expected something more expanded on each chapter of Epi's history, with more detail on the crucial Kalamazoo period. Of this, there is no real new info, and I would like to see every model covered in text and pictorially, not just the same guitars we've seen in other books. I'm sure you know the stuff I wanted to see, the progression from using "New York" pickups and parts, through to all Gibson sourced items, and more on the Beat group and Beatle instruments and their strong cultural influence. More detail. More, more, more. Production totals and insider factory info would also have been interesting; who made them within Gibson? Who designed the new models? Did they have a separate production line? The rest of the book is well written, as Walter Carter is a good music writer, and the layouts are good, if not pin sharp (which in 2013 they should be). It covers all Epiphones, from all eras, which is good. If you don't have an Epiphone book, its a good read. If you need more on the Gibson-made Epi's, join the queue here. It may be a long wait.

3.0 out of 5 stars At least they made this, 2 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was disappointed with the appearance of both the vinyl and the sleeve. No care has gone into the manufacture of this product, it must have all been OK'd & done by email. I have an original and there is no comparison in the tactile and practical quality of the products. The original still sounds fab, too. To be honest I did not expect this to be a perfect clone, and it isn't, but at least they issued it to honour the Beatles and this ground-breaking first record, and nobody could be happier about that, and likewise, nobody will ever think a re-release is any good. But I bought it anyway. Maybe it will become a rarity? Who knows, but it is still a great record, especially if you hear it with Ringo on drums. Either way, it is possibly the most important British record ever issued, and long may they re-release it in any form!

Twisting My Melon: The Autobiography

3.0 out of 5 stars Have your melon twisted!, 24 Nov. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The reviews on publication were glowing, but I don't find this book as funny as it was claimed. Yes, some of the tales are mental, bizarre and alarming, and our Shaun comes across as a fairly bright and decent guy, albeit with a lack of morals and a love of getting off his face at any cost. Somehow the engaging and hilarious Shaun seen on film and in interview just isn't the same when he's setting out his story in print, at least for me. I like the man, but the impression he has of the scale of his own talents seems off kilter. It is a pretty accurate depiction of a particular era and culture that became enormous quickly, without much hype from the media, particularly the London-based type, as does happen occasionally, and is a pretty frank account. For some of it, you had to be there, and you maybe wouldn't have liked it, but I overall at least it doesn't ever seem boring or made up. I miss Shaun Ryder's voice and accent when I read it though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jimbo makes a 1990s comeback!, 24 Nov. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
At the time I was watching repeats of the Rockford Files TV show in the 1990s, I didn't know they were making some new ones, as the UK stations didn't show them. Considering the 1970s series to be among the very best TV shows ever, I was intrigued to discover these, and well presented in decent quality dvd format. I haven't watched all episodes yet, as the earlier ones have too much Angel Martin in them and not enough Rockford, and there is a little too much pastiche of the 1970s shows, with the Firebird still getting wrecked, and not enough L.A. reality. So we have an older Rockford, which is fine, being hung up by scriptwriters who aren't sure what to give him. Considering most were produced in the post-Pulp Fiction modern era, so far the scripts are not up to scratch for me, although the bar is always set high on Rockford. James Garner does a sterling job, regardless. Paradise Cove still looks good, and if you have got this far you will want to buy this set anyway, just out of respect. Its Jimbo sorting stuff out and doing Jimbo stuff, so just do it!

Guitar Legends: The Evolution of the Guitar from Fender to G and L
Guitar Legends: The Evolution of the Guitar from Fender to G and L
by George Fullerton
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL BOOK ON THE FENDER AND POST-FENDER ERAS, 24 Nov. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book effectively tells George Fullerton's version of the history of Fender guitars, and onward through the Music Man and G&L periods, which is another way of saying the full evolution of Leo Fender's designs. George Fullerton's input was very important in all of this, and the story is told well, with some interesting instruments in the photo sections. Required reading about the days when quality solid body electric guitars were all made in the USA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bargain printer, top quality kit!, 31 Dec. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Briefly, I've owned Epson printers for the last decade, and this is the cheapest and best. It is fully functioned, excellent print and scan quality, and is VERY quick to print. I can't think of a down side apart from the cost of epson ink. We seem to be stuck with this situation, as generic cartridges work, but are "reported" online to epson via the sneaky hardware, and then "unrecognised" and have to be changed. This is plainly unfair, as there's no damage caused by the generics, other than to epson's turnover figures. Top printer, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last - a book about Gibson steels!, 13 Jun. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent, fairly exhaustive, well overdue account of Gibson's steel and Hawaiian models from the 1930's onwards. The book looks great, is clearly laid out with lots of top quality photos and long-overdue information from Gibson's records re. serial numbers, batches, shipping dates, if you are into that sort of thing. It is very well written, too, as one would expect from this author. For musicians, music fans and guitar collectors alike, this is an essential purchase. I bought two!
