Preparation for the Next Life
Preparation for the Next Life
by Atticus Lish
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.74

5.0 out of 5 stars Romeo and Juliet, 2 April 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A modern day Romeo and Juliet. Perhaps a tribute often made but this is the real deal.
I struggled at first with the staccato text before I realised that it was my own laziness that was preventing my from seeing the beauty in the writing.
A book of great significance and skill. A book about which I continue to think, likely for some time yet.
Thanks Atticus.

3.0 out of 5 stars Doink, 11 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Undoubtedly a superbly written evocative book, but I found it quite hard going. I struggled to get into the characters and found that I lost track unless I read it in long sittings. Maybe that's just my failing memory. A book that I intend to finish, but not a bedtime reader, unless you stay up all night.

McCarthy is a genius. I would read his shopping list if he published it.

Did this win awards? If it didn't it bloody well should have. Stunning performances from Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. Totally gripping.

Punchy and captivating. I hate comparisons, but this work is very much in the vein of Pelecanos. More please.

Wow. And wow again. I find it hard to believe that this was a first novel as it is written with such sublime beauty. The comparison to Cormac McCarthy is rightly deserved. You may guess I am a McCarthy fan and now having read all of his work I have another avenue to explore. Thank you Mr Gay.

What is there not to like about the Chromatics, however not quite as good as the last album, which incidentally was outstanding. So I guess that makes this just excellent.
