This book offers more battle, magery and survivals against all odds. I read it avidly and cannot wait for the next instalment. Everything I was hoping for.

3.0 out of 5 stars an acceptable read, 16 May 2014

I was able to read this without changing over to another title. The concepts were clever and a decent design of a unique world. Though flashbacks of lion the witch and the wardrobe will pop into your mind the author does manage a new twist on the conceit by introducing a happily married couple into a new world. Unfortunately the story progresses rather too rapidly and plot progressions are forced and in places very predictable. I would still be inclined to give further works by this author another chance.

A book that I picked up by chance on a scroll through amazon, this is one of the best written books I have read in this genre in a long time. Though the characters develop to hero or evil in a well trodden fantasy style, the concepts underlying the story are well designed and are introduced in a way to leave you wishing for more. In addition the writing style and depth of main character is one to stand up with the best classic fantasy writers. Definitely give this one a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars impossible to put down, 21 July 2013

I picked up this book because it featured on a list of great fantasy books, and I was not disappointed. Despite the core theme being about banking (!), Abraham has set up a rising tide of anticipation with strong and vibrant characters, ending this book leaving me desperate to get home and download the next one. If you enjoy a good fantasy, with complex characters who are wholly human in their mix of altruism and greed, then this is for you.
