4.0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag, 13 Dec 2012
This review is from: Songs (Audio CD)
I purchased this CD for the song Parla Più Piano which is one of my all time favourites. Yes, there are only three verses to this song - and repeated twice - so it was a bit disconcerting to hear Placido sing the first verse twice - one after the other - and then the second verse only once. Then we come to What a Wonderful World......mmmmmm shame there was nobody about to tell Placido and son that they had sung the wrong words twice.....I hear babies cry, I watch them grow.....THEY'RE AINT more than I'll ever know?? Oh dear.

Rest of the songs....apart from Bésame Mucho ok but nothing mind blowing......Placido's voice is amazing for his age and knocks a lot of his younger contemporaries into a cocked hat but I prefer him in "Opera Mode"

But what the album is worth having for is the duet with Susan Boyle......From This Moment On. Absolutely stunning. She gives them all a run for their money! If you don't want the whole album, purchase the download of this song. You won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really fiddly to put on, 2 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have very hard nails so when they split, they split very far down. Whilst these do help save the nail, it's incredibly fiddly to cut what you need and then put it on - they don't appear to be self sticking so .... make sure you have very good tweezers and scissors to hand and the glue!! and they don't last so they do have to keep being replaced. However, they will save your nail so..........they do what they say

5.0 out of 5 stars The book I have been looking for!!!!, 2 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have been teaching myself Italian for about two years but have been struggling with the grammer. At last, a book that describes the meaning of EVERY verb tense, pronoun etc and their equivalent in Italian as well as how the Italians use them. All is described in simple terms with examples and there are review exercises with answers at the back of the book. I have learnt more in the week since I have had this book than I have in the past two years. A must have if you are learning Italian

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the encore and the curtain calls, 25 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Like another reviewer I have the Netrebko and Villazon version which was absolutely stunning. Rolando's rendition of Una Furtiva Lagrima in this production is worth buying the DVD for. The audience truly appreciated it as they did the whole cast evidenced by the curtain calls. Yes, if you want another version with the stunningly talented Mr. Villazon to add to your collection, this is a must have.

3.0 out of 5 stars Only worth buying if you are a fan of Alessandro Safina., 17 July 2011

This review is from: E Lucean Le Stelle (MP3 Download)
If you like Alessandro then this is worth buying. However, it's a very strange production with quite a few instrumental tracks. Safina's E Lucevan le Stelle is great so would recommend a download of this track only.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such an under-rated opera but absolutely fantastic., 17 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Massenet: Werther (Audio CD)
Werther is not an opera that is as well known as its Italian counterparts but it certainly deserves to be up there with the best of the best. Massenet's score is full of tenderness, passion, drama and Pappano's direction of the husband and wife team of Alagna and Gheorghiu is superb. A highly recommended recording of this brilliant opera. I saw Rolando Villazon in Werther at the ROH and he was absolutely fantastic as Werther - as was Sophie Koch as Charlotte - and I would also highly recommend the DVD with Jonas Kaufmann as Werther and Sopie Koch as Charlotte.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Production!, 17 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Verdi: Otello [DVD] [2010] (DVD)
I bought this DVD purely because I am a fan of Vittorio Grigolo and it's the only opera I have found with him in it. However, it was Josè Cura who blew me away. He performed with such intensity and vigour that I was drawn into every emotion he was feeling. A magnificent portrayal of Otello. Yes, the production is minimalistic and it does all revolve around the large cross but I preferred it to the traditional staging of other productions and I think Willy Decker did a fantastic job. Lado Ataneli was superb as Jago as was Krassimira Stoyanova as Desdemona and Vittorio as Cassio was great [especially when he removed his shirt :)] but the star of the show, deservedly so, was Cura. A "must have" to add to anybody's collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning production of Romeo and Juliet....the wedding ring?, 19 Jun 2011
I totally agree with what both reviewers have said. It is a minimalist production in the sense of scenery but the atmosphere is kept alive throughout by the performances of all the major participants. The orchestra and conductor sweep you along to the end without a pause. Great singing and acting by all concerned. Being a fan of Villazon and Netrebko together, I found Nino Machaidze had me captivated. Villazon..........as usual.........stunning. Thrills and excitment all the way and the end has me in tears no matter how many times I watch it. Would love to know the reason why Villazon decided to take his wedding ring off halfway through the performance ..........right in the middle of one of the love duets!!

5.0 out of 5 stars ROH does it again!!, 8 Jun 2011

This is a stunning production of Verdi's Don Carlo under the direction of Antonio Pappano. The staging is fantastic ande I have never seen Rolando in anything where he does not give his heart and soul to the performance. All the rest of the principal characters are brilliant also. Buy and enjoy time and time again

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, 8 Jun 2011

This is a lovely album of popular French arias and as usual, Rolando does justice to whatever he sings. Whether you are a fan of his or not, buy this album because you will not be disappointed
