2.0 out of 5 stars Dud replacement, 13 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The siren and torch features might be useful if you were stranded in a jungle...but as a handy domestic radio (which my previous model certainly was) this one's a dud. Tinny sound, especially for music.

3.0 out of 5 stars Over-rated author, 13 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Franny and Zooey (Paperback)
Recently re-read Catcher In The Rye, and like this, one wonders what all the fuss was about. Some "fine" writing, but no energy or urgency. Silly spoilt characters. Salinger had a way with adolescent attitudes, but spread thinly over a writing career, who cares?

4.0 out of 5 stars Last Hitch, 4 May 2013

This review is from: Mortality (Kindle Edition)
Courage and humour as Hitch faces the end. Generosity of spirit, too. He goes down fighting. His mind is alive and kicking even as his body breaks down. Moving, inspiring, exemplary.

Terra Nullius: A Journey Through No One's Land
Terra Nullius: A Journey Through No One's Land
by Sven Lindqvist
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Oz's Dark History, 23 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Sling another Abo on the barbie, Bruce, and round up a few of their Sheilas...
How Australia was built on the backs of its indigenous people. A shocking account, stark, original and humane.
Lindqvist doesn't waste a word or a moment of your time as he transforms your outlook and scorches the facts into your imagination.
A remarkable historian who thinks with feeling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff, 23 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Exterminate All The Brutes is Lindqvist's masterpiece. Everyone should read it.
European colonialism X-rayed, held to account, and trounced.
And formally the book is strikingly original. Unforgettable, mind-changing.
Desert Divers is good, too.

Beware Of God
Beware Of God
by Shalom Auslander
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.91

5.0 out of 5 stars Laughter In The Blackest Dark, 23 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Beware Of God (Paperback)
I don't know how he gets away with it.
You CAN'T make me laugh like this about persecution, genocide, death and disaster – it's illegal.
But it's weirdly cathartic. Saying the unsayable often is.
And humour can redeem anything.
A real comic gift, like Jacky Mason with his yarmulke on fire.

Foreskin's Lament
Foreskin's Lament
by Shalom Auslander
Edition: Paperback
Price: £5.59

4.0 out of 5 stars Oy!, 23 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Foreskin's Lament (Paperback)
Self-lacerating autobiog about surviving (barely) a fierce Orthodox Jewish upbringing. No-holds-barred – makes your eyes water, funny and painful both. A hip update of Portnoy's Complaint – less "literary", even more confrontational – like being buttonholed in a dead-end bar by a desperado with a sawn-off sense of humour. You feel lucky to get out alive, and hope he will too, in the end.
His novel, Hope: A Tragedy is even better. Scandalously funny.

3.0 out of 5 stars Oh Zadie, 9 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: NW (Hardcover)
White Teeth was a stunning debut, but Zadie's subsequent novels have disappointed me. She's wonderfully gifted, but (perhaps inevitably) literary self-consciousness seems to inhibit her. NW is stop-start, endlessly promising, never delivering. Terrific bits, all at odds with one another. Novelist interruptus.

From the Ruins of Empire: The Revolt Against the West and the Remaking of Asia

5.0 out of 5 stars At Last, 9 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
At last we're getting imperial history from the "other" side. Essential if we're to understand our present and future. The book's an eye-opener, urgent and necessary. Mishra's a judicious and impassioned writer and his range and ambition are epic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dive Straight In, 9 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Desert Divers (Paperback)
Just back from the desert when I read this. Like all Lindqvist's work, it's gold-dust – utterly focused, fiercely energised, original and shocking. Overall, he's revealing the truth about the West's appalling exploitation of the rest of the world, the rape, pillage, lies and genocide. We need him.
