2.0 out of 5 stars Ok Story, BUT More Work Required on CGI, 7 Feb 2014
This review is from: Flyboys [DVD] (DVD)
The Lafayette Escadrille were a potent and active French Neiuport 11 and later Neiuport 28-C1 fighter force in WW1, boasting many fine and courageous pilots and aces, many of whom gave their lives in the conflict.

The film itself I found somewhat entertaining as a story, but its credibility in fact is that it is probably another fictional revision of actual history just like Red Baron! Don't go here if you want to know what American forces did in the air service of WW1.

I would like to ask the film makers one question.....did the German Air Force in WW1 only fly Fokker Dr1 triplanes? Well, fact is, no they did not. I am afraid that is what we saw everywhere in this film, and begs the question did the film makers run out of money to design the others in CGI? Well? What about these aircraft: Pfalz, Fokker DVII, and Albatross DV/DVa? In fact, unbeknown to most, Manfred von Richtoffen scored most of his 80 kills in an Albatross fighter and not a Fokker Triplane, and actually the majority of the so called 'Red Barons Flying Circus', although spectacularly coloured, were again not Fokker Triplanes. My mount of choice would have been a Fokker DVII.....a beautiful piece of kit with its Mercedes engine that could outfly just about anything in the air at the time. Come on film makers, WAKE UP!!

Just like Red Baron, I was again dismayed by the CGI sequences. This attempt was better than the ridiculous Red Baron, but there is again still some considerable way to go yet.

The storyline of this film was somewhat better and supposedly based on fact, but for my money The Blue Max still comes out tops after all these years. The storyline and action sequences still outshine this.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Platinum Standard, 25 Jan 2014

The late, great, Alan Whicker, and his programme Whickers World, set the platinum standard by which all other international journalists should be judged. And what a standard! To far flung exotic destinations, to see interesting places, and to meet interesting people, with a sense of style and sophistication atune to the quintessential British gentleman abroad, Alan is the international jet set journalist who takes you, the common person, there. This in a time when mass tourism, computers, internet, and mobile phones were all things of the future. Truly remarkable! In my opinion nobody, even now, has come close to achieving what Alan Whicker did.

Whickers World is a landmark in television international journalism that is as crisp, vibrant, informative, revealing, and down right entertaining to watch now as it was when it first aired on television. When you watch this series, you will realise to what depths international journalism on television has fallen.

I lament both Alans and the programmes passing, because you will most certainly not see anything like this quality of television today. Alans sense of style and his revealing interviews, without a trace of probing or pressurising his interviewee's are so perfectly and cleverly done. Alan was a master at this, and his approach simply kicks all other chat show hosts into touch! I have never seen anyone interview people so well on television.

As my father once said on seeing Alan Whicker for the first time, 'At last.....a journalist who actually knows what the hell he is talking about! Brilliant!!' I totally agree! This series fills you with a sense of adventure and excitement like no other, and in my case so much so that Alan was the person who inspired me to take up an international career.

Whickers World was a series that many loved, and these DVD's are a delight from start to finish. If you want to be entertained by a true professional international journalist, this is definitely for you. A total delight from start to finish. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Platinum Standard. Thank You Alan Whicker, 2 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In those far off days, as a boy, when I watched Whickers World with my parents, air travel was a new and exciting adventure, as was the world and the many varied people who lived in it. The days of computers, internet, and mobile phones had not arrived.

Those of us then, without the means to travel and experience far flung places way back in the 70's, could only ever dream of what they and their peoples were like. The world was only just opening up to mass tourism, and many places had never been explored in depth on UK television before.

Alan Whicker was the first man who took you, the common person, to exotic destinations you had only ever dreamed of, and interspersed the journey with revealing and wonderful commentaries of places, and interviews with interesting people encountered, during a time of remarkable world change. And all this, I might add, with an air of style and sophistication of the quintessential British gentleman abroad. Remarkable!

If a platinum grade can ever be awarded to a programme, then Whickers World earned this accolade time and time again. This is why Whickers World was so popular and loved.....it really took you there, and showed you places and gave insights into people and events that and who you might never experience in a lifetime again. With each show you learned something about a place, its people, the times, and certain personages that were unusual and interesting in themselves. This was real entertainment. How I miss it!

Alan's interviewing style was so subtle and clever the audience always were afforded a true insight without the subject ever feeling that they were being probed or pressured, and his commentaries always left you feeling more informed, interspersed, as they were, with a little light humour here and there.

My fathers comments on first seeing Alan Whicker were, 'At last....a journalist who knows what the hell he is talking about!' Alan himself made such a superb job of the presentation of all the Whickers World Series, and this compilation is no different. A true joy and a pleasure to watch in every single respect.

It is true, nobody had neither done it better before Alan nor has done it better since. Many have tried! On these DVD's, Alan recounts his past adventures, and re-visits some of the wonderful places and people he encountered on his travels across the globe. Retrospectively, and with an air of some nostalgia I might add, Alan himself comments on how things have so radically changed, some things for the better, and others for the worst, whilst his interviews with past people he encountered are still exceptionally clever and insightful.

I am certainly endebted to Alan for bringing the world and his insight of such wonderful places, events, and people, into the living room of the common person. This alone sets Alan Whicker apart for his achievement and truly remarkable contribution to television. I additionally grieve that television and the world has lost such a remarkable man, and that programmes of the quality presented by Alan Whicker are no longer with us on our screens today.

Alan's series inspired a whole generation, including myself, to follow in his very own footsteps. Can anyone still remember saying.....one day I will go where Alan Whicker is? I can! What better epitaph can a man wish for than that? Thank you Alan Whicker. Gone now....but never forgotten.....you inspired a generation, and continue to inspire.

Some songs are instantly forgetable. Then there are songs that stay with you all of your life. Spirit in The Sky is a song that stays with you for life. Hats off to Norman Greenbaum, what an excellent job he made of this song. A true classic in every sense. What wonderful things people did with such basic kit in the sixties to produce wonderful songs like this. Distorted guitar effects through a poor amplifier....what a stroke of genius. Get this untampered version of the song. I found that the re-mastered version simply does not sound the same. Simply speaking, nobody can better what Norman achieved. It's the best!

HGST Touro Desk DX3 4TB External Hard Drive - Black

5.0 out of 5 stars HGST Touro 4TB DX3 Hard Drive, 20 Aug 2013
There is no longer HITACHI on the front of this drive. It has TOURO on the front of it. This is because HGST has been taken over by Western Digital, and so this drive is now a WD drive! So why bother looking at the more expensive WD 4TB Net Book drive as this is cheaper and just as good, if not probably better. My computer operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate, and it has USB 3.0. Looks? Silver plastic binding edge, with shiny black plastic front and back. There is a blue LED at the bottom of the vertical stood drive to indicate on and data transfer, but there is no on/off switch. Experience? Plug and play! Was immediately recognised by the computer when the power supply was switched on. The drive comes with iCloud, but I took all this off the drive as I only want it for mass storage and not computer back up. With the software off, you get 3.63TB of space on the drive, but if the drive is entirely re-formatted I suspect that the full 4TB could be realised. The power supply unit comes with adaptors for two pin and three pin UK connection, but only has a one metre lead length from the plug in unit, so the power source has to be nearby. I have not done any benchmark testing, but my experience is that the drive is pretty fast. It should be stood vertical to operate. If you lay it on its side, or move it while in operation, it appears to not like this and brings up prompts on the computer. The USB connection lead to the unit has an ugly looking connection at the drive end, but it is certainly substantial and a lot less flimsy and therefore less prone to break off than the minature ends that connect to a WD Passport style drive. Pretty quiet as drives go. Gave a few thumpy bumpy sounds when taking in large lumps of data, but in what I would call 'standard' operation normally much quieter than even a WD Passport drive. Working great so far, and pleased with the drive.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Work Boots I Have Ever Had!, 21 July 2013
I travel the world and build power stations. In mud, muck, wet, sand, soil, tramping on soil site roads through water and sludge up to the ankles, with obstacles all around, timber with nails, and also working with electrical gear (they are antistatic too), these boots take it all in their stride. When Dewalt stamp 'Guaranteed Tough' on the side, they mean it! Steel toe cap to 200 joules means no smashed toes, and the sole steel plate means no nails through the foot. S3 European Footware Rating, so they are the tops when it comes to rated foot protection. No leaks! Your feet remain comfortable and dry, with good ankle support. In hot climates, to stop foot sweat stink, belt in a pair of Scholl odour eaters. To be quite frank, you do not get so much of that because they are breathable too!! Had my last pair over two years now and although scuffed, they are still working great. If you are like me, and out and about on sites on a regular basis where threats to your feet exist, you cannot better these boots for your personal foot protection. I wear them always on site, and like one other reviewer noted, while ever they are made I will always use these for my site foot safety. They are really the best.

Lock N' Load with R. Lee Ermey [DVD]
Lock N' Load with R. Lee Ermey [DVD]
Price: £19.90

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Series, Excellent Presenter, 4 Feb 2013
Who better to host this series than a professional US Marine, and who better as a person than R Lee Ermy. In Lock n' Load with R Lee Ermy, you get to see stunning 3D representations of the weapons, learn about their development, and actually see their use by a guy unafraid to get down and dirty trigger time with the real thing. Factual, and sometimes humorous, this series is without a doubt excellent, and excellently presented by a truly professional soldier. Other than DIY weapon use at the range, or getting your hands on a helicopter gunship or an artillery piece, what more could anyone want? It does not get much better than this! Superb!!

The H-a-n-s-o-n-s.....Killer Carlson.......Bradens striptease on ice.....and Reggie Dunlops predicament. 'Yeah, straight up, he's so stinking that if he gets boarded he will pee all over himself!!','NEVER PLAY LADY OF SPAIN AGAIN!!!!', and 'Putting on the foil...we do it every game!','Oh poo to old time hockey...you're The Charlestown Chiefs, the toughest team in the league...!! Scouts???!!!' Ha, ha, welcome to Slapshot. Not what you might call ice hockey, but what you might call full gladiatorial activities on ice!! Freaking wonderful. I LOVE this film. It is a real blast, and just full of funny surprises everywhere. No wonder Newman himself loved it too. Look out for The Hansons. They ain't a music band!! If you liked Animal House, then you will certainly like this. The humour is on the same level.

Danny Ocean manages to convince the parole board that he is a reformed prisoner, and gets released after four years behind bars. He then rounds up a talented crew to undertake the most audatious robbery of all time......the theft of $160 million from the most secure vault in the world that services the Mirage, Bellagio, and MGM Grand casinos in Las Vegas. How does he do that?!

This film is the epitomy of cool. In every respect it has an air of sophistication and just oozes pure class and coolness. The cast is spectacular, ranging from young to old, with each character excellently played, especially George Clooney as Daniel Ocean. The performances are magnificent. The storyline is excellent, and the film is very expertly paced by Soderbergh so that the plot unfolds gradually without revealing all to the audience too soon. This alone is wonderful, and adds to audience surprise and excitement in the realisation of how the crew undertake the robbery, and how they overcome the twists and turns that occur. I even like the finishing music to the film which is just totally cool and also oozes class. The first piece of end music is in the same league as Green Onions by Booker T & The MG's as it is so cool.

I found this film to be so refreshing when compared against the sequel films that were in some places just too fast, garbled, and chaotic. It is often the case that film sequels never stack up to the original, and it is certainly true with Oceans 11.

So, for such a small price, obtain a real cool film gem, and sit back in the comfort of your own home and watch how these cool guys pull off such a wonderful robbery. This is entertainment at its best.

I enjoyed Oceans 11 immensely, and hope that you do too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Comedy, 26 Jun 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Charlie Drake is an unsung hero of British comedy. Can anyone ever forget that catch phrase, 'Hello my darlings!' As a lad, I watched The Worker with my parents, and always found myself amazed at Charlies wonderful and perfectly timed comedic performances with Henry McGee. I also remember rolling around laughing at the slapstick antics. Direct speeches to the camera, with bright witty comic quips were always refreshingly fantastic. When you watch this DVD you find yourself asking where has this level of comedy gone. There is nothing today even like this level of quality. For many years Charlie faded away into obscurity, not seen so much anymore on TV at all; and then, as if by chance, I happened upon him! In the late 1980's he was acting at The Stamford Arts Centre Theatre, and had holed up in The George Hotel, Stamford. I was there with friends for a pint or two. For such a wonderful comedian, Charlie was only very small in stature. It appeared only correct later that he performed as Smallweed in the adaptation of Charles Dickens Bleak House. I caught up with him drinking a beer at the hotel bar suprisingly alone. It was his night off from the theatre. I introduced myself, and took the liberty to have a small chat with him about The Worker and his other ventures. Charlie was quite open. He told me that in The Worker he did all his own stunts. One stunt was being thrown through a piece of plate glass. That really happened in an episode at the end of one of the series, and Charlie was in hospital for about three months afterwards with many broken bones. He told me that it was one of the biggest mistakes of his career to have allowed himself to be hurt in this way, despite the roars of laughter from the audience. Said Charlie, 'They were all laughing.....but I wasn't!' On a lighter note, however, and on reflection, Charlie was glad that The Worker was still remembered, and that it had given so much pleasure to so many people. I told Charlie that I personally had always thought of him as a comic genius, and that I always would. He shook my hand and thanked me. I bought the fellow a pint, and then went back over to my mates, not wanting to disturb Charlies quiet moment. If you watch The Worker you will see that there is no smut. There is no reliance on swearing to achieve a laugh. It is just good clean straightforward wonderfully timed comedy. Henry McGee too plays it to perfection with remarkable timing. I find The Worker as refreshing today as it was back then. God bless Charlie......gone now, but still as much a comic genius today as he ever was.
