5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest musical films of all time but something very wrong with the English soundtrack on this bluray release, 16 Jun 2014
First up, "Oliver!" is one of, if not THE best musical film ever made. Lionel Bart's masterpiece was lovingly brought to the screen by expert hands, and every department excels. Big time Oscar winner includings nods fo Best Picture and Best Director. Why ron Moody missed out on the Best Actor statue remains one of the planet's greta unsolved mystery. The only move to ever win an Oscar for choreography, and one of the few musicals to win the coveted Best Sound Achievement Oscar. Which brings me to my only gripe with this release. "Oliver!" was originally released as a 70mm blow-up with 6 channel "Oscar winning" sound. I saw it at the cinema, the sound quality overwhelmed, as did the sound quality on the 1984 VHS release - bet VHS tape I ever heard. The Pioneer Laser disc release had an exceptional soundtrack, lush sweeping strings sweeping the room and a kick and vibrancy unparalleled. The BluRay's English Soundtrack....what the hell happened? Thin, fibrous sounding, very little punch, no lush richness whatsoever. Did somebody screw up or were they unable to find or use the sound elements which had been used for the Pioneer Laser Disc release. I would love to know the answer. For anyone wondering what I'm talking about, jump to the undertaker's scene where Oliver fights with Noah, and listen to the German soundtrack and then repeat with the English soundtrack. The German soundtrack mix features all the lushness the English soundtrack lacks. Such a shame that quality control has been sadly neglected on such a prestige BluRay release. Shame on the folk at Sony. This film deserves much better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Bluray Audio transfer, 18 Jan 2014

Barbra Streisand was perfectly cast in this show on Broadway and the film producers had the good sense to offer her the film role some years later. I think this is her best film musical work. In its first release, the film was shot on 35mm and printed onto 70mm stock to take advantage of 70mm's ability to feature 6 track stereo sound. Having read the notes on the Bluray release, it appears the drive to create a restored version of the film was spurred by Barbra Streisand herself. The soundtrack on this Bluray release is stunning.

This is a perfect film. I saw it and loved it when I was 7 years old, and every viewing just reminds me how good it is. This film gets better every time you watch it, and the Bluray transfer is excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars As close as you can get to a Broadway performance without being in NYC, 18 Jan 2014

An interesting musical. Stunning performances, let down by a less than perfect original score.
So nice to see a broadway musical so well filmed.

Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'Be: The Life of Lionel Bart
Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'Be: The Life of Lionel Bart

5.0 out of 5 stars This man changed British music and theatre forever. This book does him justice., 18 Jan 2014

Exceptionally written book from cover to cover following the life of Lionel Bart, the unrecognised father of the British Pop Industry and the British Musical. The world knows "Oliver!" but "Oliver!" is but a small part of Lionel Bart's prolific output through the 1960's. Bart had the midas touch, was mocked by the establishment, adored by artists and exploited by "hangers on". Despite a fall from grace into the worlds of drugs and alcohol, his work remained revered the world over, and he rose again to be a grand master in his own right in his later years. Uplifting, inspiring and accurate biography of a character, more interesting than any literature has managed to create.
