Not original, just somehow better than most I have read., 29 Jun 2011
In the last 30 something years I have read close to 8000 SCI-FI and Fantasy books. So I generally approach a new author with some trepidation and little expectation of something new.
In this case there was nothing new, the theme was a tried and tested sword and sorcery tale, hero, wizard etc etc. But the book was one of those that takes all the elements you come to expect and just delivers them in such a way that you are hooked. The characters are well delveloped and, well, interesting.
It is rare to find a book that makes you care about the characters (+ an horse in this case). I found myself really hoping for the wizard to fall flat on his face, with the heroes size 20 boot pushing his face into the mud..A very enjoyable read, thank you to the author for making an old tale new and exciting.
So many authors try to re-invent the wheel with a different spin, not always successfully. It is refreshing to see one take an old formula and deliver it very well indeed. Top marks.
Roll on book 2.
