3.0 out of 5 stars IMPOSSIBLE, 9 Jun 2007
This is impossible to decide. There are just too many different opinions of the Beatles. My recommendation is that you buy The White Album first, then, if you like that, you might like this, although the white album, in my opinion is much better.

I think this has some brilliant songs on it - it didn't get voted best album of all time many times for nothing! So buy it then.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meh!, 14 May 2007

There's nothing to be said that hasn't already been said in these reviews. To be blunt, BUY THIS ALBUM IF YOU LIKE GUNS N' ROSES, it's as simple as that!

Ignore all rubbish reviews that say, "It's the sound of a band breaking up". What a load of crap. Any half-wit guns n' roses fan would know that these were recorded at the same time as Use your illusion, even before! Trust me, it's a good album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Years on, it still impresses me., 14 Aug 2006
This review is from: Nola (Audio CD)
Yes, this album is exceptional, Down, a metal supergroup formed from bandmembers of Pantera, Corrosion of Confromity, Crowbar and Superjoint Ritual, is brilliantly put together album, the very raw sound of this album never fails, right through to the last track. You know it is going to be a brilliant album, once you've listened to that amazing first track, 'Temptations Wings', that riff is so powerful. Lifer is another track which dosen't dissapoint. Anselmo's vocals just don't dimmer at all throughout the entire album.

The number one standout track is definately 'Stone The Crow', no doubt about that. It is mellower than many of the other, but does not sacrifice any of Downs ability with that mellowness. Pepper Keenan is at his best in that track, which surely has one of the best riffs I have heard. The riff is highly reminisant of Keenan's home band of Corrosion of Conformity, and is combined with Anselmo's vocals, so brilliantly portrayed in his band, Pantera.

So why only 4 stars? Well I would've given it 5, if I didn't know that they could've done better, which they could've. It just sounds like there is something missing. Everything is there, but perhaps it just a little under-produced. But one could argue that they left it like that on purpose to acheive that 'raw' effect. Even so, I still think they could've done more with this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pantera, Corrosion of conformity and Superjoint Ritual rolled into one!, 14 Aug 2006
Wow, what can I say? I thought they could never improve on NOlA (their first), but I was mistaken! For NOlA was such a great peice of musicianship. But this far surpasses NOLA, it seems like a much more mature album than NOLA, with songs like Beautifully depressed and Ghosts along the mississippi, this album just stays strong for all 15 of it's amazing tracks. Every track has a unique, powerful riff which is surpassed by the following track. in other words, this album just gets better as it goes along. Perhaps the peak of this album is not the last track as you might expect, after what i just said, but no, it peaks around 3/4 of the way through with the song 'New Orleans is a dying Whore', despite the odd name, I find that this song is the most meaningful of all the tracks on this truly exceptional album from Phil Anselmo, Pepper Keenan, Rex Brown and the rest. I hope you can enjoy this album as I have many times, since it's release.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Summary Of Leadbelly's Legacy, 19 Jun 2006
This review is from: The Definitive (Audio CD)
Leadbelly was a truly amazing man. He was caring, he loved children , and his emotion was beautifully depicted in this album, which personally, I believe to be a literally, awesome album.

Over 70 songs, spanning his first recordings in 1934, and his very last ones before he was forced to quit the guitar due to an arm injury in 1949. His twelve string guitar merely emphasises this emotion, by giving his songs a much deeper sound. And his voice...Wow. What a powerful voice. This man could carry any tune home without trying, and It was a shame that he did'nt live any longer.

The first disc is basically all of his greatest hits. For example, the very fist track, "Grasshopper in my Pillow", displays one of his catchier riffs that he wrote, as well as his supreme voice. Another favouritew of mine is, "You cain't loose - a - mee Cholly" a great little song. Other highlights include: Pick A Bale O' Cotton, goodnight Irene and C.C Rider. But the best song on this disc has to be "Black Girl". This was covered by Nirvana on their Unplugged show, but changing to "My Girl, my Girl..." instead of "Black Girl, black girl..." which leadbelly did. This song is basically Leadbelly summarised to a further degree in just over 2 minutes. Although all of Leadbelly's songs sound very similar, this one to me, is special because, not only does it display the emotion in his voice and his guitar, but it also paints a picture of Leadbelly as a person, as well as a songwriter: emotional, sensitive and spiritual.

The format stays very similar in the other two discs, which are all his lesser known songs throughout career, my favourites include: Looky Looky Yonder, Roberta, Gray Goose, Death Letter Blues, My Friend Blind Lemon (dedicated to Blind Lemon Jefferson, who inspired him to play music), Alabama Bound and When I was A cowboy. All of these songs are brilliant, but every single other one is amazing to listen to as well. So buy this CD, the sound quality is brilliant, with little hissing and Leadbelly happens to be, quite possibly, the greatest blues singer that ever lived.

You may think that this is too many songs to buy for a first album, but it isn't. I myself purchased this compilation, and loved it, and i'm sure you will too.

5.0 out of 5 stars id give this 1000 stars if i could!!, 7 Jun 2006
Words can not describe how amazing this album is! It has you on the edge until all 53 minutes are up. From the brutal, mind stopping opening 10 seconds of the title track, to the grinding, screaming solos of Dimebag (RIP), this album has everything.
What is amazong also, is that how unpredictable it is. People are always sagging off bands like Pantera because they say all their songs sound the same. Nothing coud be further from the truth. Every riff, solo and drumbeat on this album are unique. Vinnie's powerful drumming keep you alive and wanting more until the ast song finishes. This is also true of Dimebag's guitar skills, which are immensely powerful, as well as his strong and catchy riffs.
This album differs so much from the other pantera albums in that it is much better than all of them put together. This album and Reinventing The Steel are the most exilerating albums you can listen to.
I hope you take this review into account when considering buying this album, and rest assured, you would not regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 stars, 16 April 2006
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I had great expectations when i purchased this game. And i was not disapointed.

The graphics are brilliant, the storyline is amazing and creative, the fighting and the shooting are fun and EA have managed to create a game like this and guess what - it's not just a rip off of Grand Theft Auto.

So why only four stars? Well it's one simple reason - it's just a little bit too repetitive! Sure the missions are fun and challenging, but it's always the same routine - you drive somewhere (sometimes with a time limit), you shoot loads of people outside, you storm a building and either have to rescue someone, or have to kill/assasinate someone.

But despite this, it still promises hours of gameplay. I hope i don't put you off buying it! It's fun designing your character, and the cutscenes are fun to watch.

Another slight problem is that it is a touch too easy. It only took me about 12 hours of gametime to become a mafia boss, and from there it isn't too hard. So you may think i'm being to generous giving it four stars, well despite these problems i still thouroughly enjoyed playing it and i hope you will too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant but couldve been better, 16 July 2004
This review is from: In Utero (Audio CD)
This is Nirvanas 4th album and is probably third best after bleach and nevermind.
This album has some truly excellent songs on it which will leave you humming for weeks, however they might have done it a little better.
It stars of with the truly excellent Serve the the Servents and the other one, these two are a brilliant way to start with excellent vocals and powerful riffs although they couldve refined it a little, its a little scrappy.
Then the signature song Heart shaped box which is truly a masterpiece, not only with sublime lyrics but with an excellent riff and a great 7 or 8 second solo which is brilliant.
Then trak 4, RApe me is a little wasteful i think, its a little boring and is too repetitive so skip this track.
Francis farmer... is an excellent song much like Heart shaped box.
The rest of the songs are brilliant and im not going to give anything away so buy it and you will hear about those songs!
All in all though i still think that bleach and nevermind are better albums and you should buy them before you buy this, but you must get this eventually.
