Roberts Duologic DAB/FM RDS Digital Stereo Radio with Built-in Battery Charger - White
Price: £69.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Good clear stereo DAB radio, 14 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A neat, well-priced DAB with excellent clarity of sound and decent stereo. We find the sound clearer than the Pure ONE which we also have.

The tuning dial goes through stations alphabetically and the smaller volume dial sits below that. It might have made more sense the other way round, but this is not a big issue.

It also has an aerial but we haven't needed this.

Can't think how we coped without this inexpensive little gem. It hulls strawberries and tomatoes with the minimum of fuss and is extremely easy to clean.

Great for the kitchen drawer and as a stocking filler for others. Highly recommended!

Schneeschieber - ENU

5.0 out of 5 stars Every UK home should have one!, 14 Jan. 2015

This review is from: Schneeschieber - ENU (Misc.)
When we visited Norway we were struck by how well prepared they are for inclement weather compared to the UK. We tend to have a snow shovel or two that we picked up at a supermarket or garden centre which are cheaply made and doesn't cope well with heavy snow. They usually break after a few uses.

This item is well made and fit for purpose. It copes best with fresh snow - if you have car tracks you may still need to use a (sturdy) shovel to clear the compacted snow there. However, with the blade appropriately angled, the plough slices beautifully through snow, moving it to the side with minimum effort.

The photo shows the result of a few minutes' ploughing compared to surrounding driveways and roads.

Be aware that the plough comes flat-packed and needs to be assembled prior to use.

This item is well designed, well made and well worth investing in if you get any snow at all where you live.

Fish Can't See Water: How National Culture can Make or Break Your Corporate Strategy
Fish Can't See Water: How National Culture can Make or Break Your Corporate Strategy
by Richard D. Lewis
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £16.58

3.0 out of 5 stars Passing interest..., 17 July 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This book takes a simple concept - you need to be aware of your national context for your business to succeed - and then takes quite some time to say it in many different ways. Given the current run-in to the Scottish Independence Referendum, it would have been interesting to see this being considered regarding the possible business impact o both Scotland and the rest of the UK. Unfortunately this is not even acknowledged as an issue.

Fringe interest, but not a 'must read'.

Innovation Governance: How Top Management Organizes and Mobilizes for Innovation

Edition: Hardcover
Price: £29.99

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a really interesting book which looks at how the best companies organise themselves to encourage innovation. For maximum impact, therefore, it really needs to be read by CEOs,or those who aspire to lead companies. Otherwise it will make a frustrating read! Lots of practical examples pepper the book and exemplify the points being made. Highly recommended if you want to avoid the mistakes made by well-known companies who 'rested on their laurels' and did not look to the future.

The Forever Girl: A Novel
The Forever Girl: A Novel
by Alexander McCall Smith
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £12.99

5.0 out of 5 stars "We imagine that people know what we're thinking, and they don't. We misunderstand one another.", 4 Jun. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Lovely review of this book from my (much) better half:

*****

Alexander McCall Smith has a deceptively calm manner. As with his Ladies' Detective Agency stories, this tale gently burbles along and it is often the intervention of the omniscient author which draws to the reader's attention, the implications of what has been said or the impending consequences of what has just happened.

The variety of settings gives the opportunity for the author to write convincingly about these places, describing in a poetic manner, their buildings, their people and their colours. Poetry and Greek legends hover throughout in the background, particularly in the conversations of the young people on their journeys through school and university days.

Conversations flow naturally, often with few words, adding to the impression that McCall Smith requires people to talk to one another and to really listen. This is apparent too in the touching final conversation between Amanda and Clover where they discuss that because people don't really talk to one another, "We all make that mistake, don't we? All the time. We imagine that people know what we're thinking, and they don't. We misunderstand one another."

I enjoyed the meandering story-line, the portraits of the characters, the lovely touches of humour particularly written into the children's characters, the frustrations in the adult world and the sense of optimism.

This review is from: The Shining [Import] (Blu-ray)
This review relates to the US version of the film which is significantly longer than the UK release and addresses one of the main problems of the shorter version - Torrance starts off unstable and goes downhill at a great rate of knots. In the US version, we get more information about him and can empathise (to a degree) with hm and his problems before he is entangled in events at the Overlook Hotel.

The blu ray picture is fantastic and very clear in 1.78:1 ratio. I found myself appreciating this film all over again and it certainly bears repeat viewings. Absolutely unmissable and one of Kubrick's finest achievements.

This is Claudio Abbado's first recording and is an absolute corker. I have owned this on tape (Decca Jubilee series), LP and now CD. The R&J suite selections are first rate and the recording is extremely clear. Listen to 'The Death of Tybalt' if you are uncertain. There is also the rare bonus of an infrequently-recorded suite from the ballet 'Chout', also by Prokofiev.

A decent price and plays Blu-ray Discs beautifully. Also copes with SACD and most other formats. Wi-fi compatible with iPlayer and other online services available.Well worth the money. You may find that you are sold a continental model, however, which means getting a converter plug (around another fiver) and downloading a manual in English from the Sony site.
