5.0 out of 5 stars Good shower, 15 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Original new shower at 9.8kW bought from a major who provided a bespoke installation service. Electrician examined wiring and was not rated for such a powerful shower. This Mira was bought as a rush job via Amazon Marketplace. It looks a treat and works well indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strange film - but great to watch, 12 Mar 2014

This review is from: O' Horten [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
The basic plot covers the star, a Norwegian train driver. The film starts a couple of days before his 67th birthday, a point where he has to retire. It has a number of amusing moments which in other contexts would be very serious ( eg. hiding under a young boy's bed when he climbed through the WRONG window; also, getting locked in a public swimming pool after skinny-dipping then finding his shoes missing and having to wear heels. The funny bit in the restaurant where the cook is arrested for being an illegal immigrant.) The film exploits the need to have something to do in retirement to avoid the emptiness that comes from full time work to nothingness. The music ( by Kaada) is brilliant and the opening sequence/ music is haunting as the train passes over the Hardinger plateau during winter. A brilliant, if at times sad, production. In Norwegian, English subtitles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Your own mini gritter, 12 Mar 2014

Arrives partly assembled. Instructions for remaining assembly have to be downloaded. A brilliant item where you need to clear a lot of snow remains but it eats up the rock salt or winter grit. Far better than a snow shovel or spreading by hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ancient China - filmed and produced in Japan, 12 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The whole production is a little "cheesy." Burt Kwouk ( Entwistle from Last of the Summer Wine") is excellent providing the narration. The episodes are complete but a rolling thread links them to the next. No subtitles but it is dubbed into English. Nice catchy theme tune. One strange item bearing in mind it is set over 1000 years ago is the actress ( in only a few episodes) who plays the sister of the lead female role actually wears a short mini skirt!!

5.0 out of 5 stars 1987 minimalism, 12 Mar 2014

This review is from: Glass: Violin Concerto (Audio CD)
My first introduction to Philip Glass. The first violin concerto is a lot more melodic than the later 2nd. It is good throughout but the last movement is great.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bought for Vitali's Chaconne, 12 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Vitali's Chaconne in G minor is a sensual piece. On this DVD it is played on a violin ( yes, stating the obvious!!!) with accompanying piano. Originally listened to it on Classic FM but a far better version ( from 1966 record) is the performance by the late Zino Francescatti accompanied by a Chamber orchestra.

Violin Concerto No.2 ""The American Four Seasons
Violin Concerto No.2 ""The American Four Seasons

5.0 out of 5 stars A great violin concerto, 12 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Essentially in 4 movements, each preceded by a violin solo. This work covers the 4 seasons but, to quote the composer, there are 16 versions depending on the order. The composer does not state the order so you can guess what you think the order should be. That done, you can change your mind the next time you listen to it. Typical Glass minimalism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Turning points for both composers, 12 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very brash Vaughn Williams 4th played with a lot of power. After this, the composer's remaining symphonic works were much more melodic ( although the 9th was slightly off). For Sibelius, the 3rd and 5th symphonies, both different from each other brought a fair degree of warmth and were "happy" on the ears. The 4th I bought to complete the collection. It is a very woe for-boding piece no doubt composed when "Jean" was under a strain - the dark side of Sibelius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Minimalism at its best, 12 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you know Philip Glass and you hadn't heard this, you would without fail recognise this as pure Philip Glass. In typical Glass form, the shorter 4 movement 3rd symphony comes first; this is followed by the longer and more proportionate 2nd symphony. Both are good - the 2nd symphony is better.
