5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, 6 Dec 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I thought this book was going to be like the other books set in this era (1950s USA and the tension between white people and black people). However there is a small twist to it. Loved the way it was written, flipping back and forth between Sarah (a black student at the school) and Linda (a white student). We therefore got both of their view points. It's hard to read what happened during the time schools were integrating, but very real. As the author wrote the story based on true accounts. Would highly recommend this book. It was a real page turner for me, as I cared about all the characters and wanted to find out more.

A sweet story with ups and downs, twists and turns. I liked the way the story flipped back and forth between the two eras then ultimately brought all the characters from the different periods of time, together in the end. The ending was quite unexpected. Perfect winters read with a warm hearted ending!

Recieved these ear phones today. They are completely different to the image. They are not silver, they are not in-ear phones and they don't fit in the ear well at all. Don't bother. This is very misleading. You're not getting what you pay for. I'm very dissatisfied. Won't use this company again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does the job to remove the sticky, tacky shellac ..., 28 Oct 2014
Does the job to remove the sticky, tacky shellac polish. You don't need too much either. Just dab a bit on cotton wool. Delivery was quick and speedy too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for winter, 28 Oct 2014

Lovely colour. Greyish / metallic / purple with sparkly undertones. Perfect for winter. When I applied the first coat, it looked watery and thin. But I was wrong. You don't need more than 2 coats to get the colour. Just wish I was neater at it, as I applied it too thick in places and it looks untidy! Happy with the purchase overall. Oh and delivery was quick too!

5.0 out of 5 stars easy and light read, 3 Oct 2014

This was an enjoyable, easy and light read. Perfect for a holiday. If you liked The Help you will enjoy this story too. The chapters go back and forth between two main characters, told from their point of views. Jane - an educated, well off young lady married to a doctor who is a social worker. And her client Ivy, a young girl working on a firm who isn't as privileged. the story shows the contrast between their lifestyles and the bond they form. I didn't know anything about the Eugenics Programme till I read this. It's a nice girly read and ending was very emotional.

1.0 out of 5 stars Struggling, tedious read., 18 Aug 2014
This review is from: The Flavours of Love (Paperback)
Tedious read. Had to persevere as it was a Book Club book. We all struggled with it. Too many topics crammed into one book – almost like the author thought of them as she went along and chucked them in. Teenage pregnancy, psycho stalker, murder, bulimia, affair, abortion etc. At the beginning we are made to believe there are many “secrets”. But the plot was thin, parts of the story were quite cringey and cheesy. The end was unsatisfying because you don’t really get the answers to the “big secrets”, you were looking for . The finale with the stalker was a like a cliché Hollywood movie. Also, there was too much jumping around in the book, back and forth. Present to past, past to present and so on.

The character Saffron also very frequently went “off into one” rambling about unnecessary and long amounts of detail. We ended up skipping a lot of the paragraphs. None of the characters were likeable or relatable, especially Saffron and her daughter. I found Saffron too irrational and erratic, with her thoughts and feelings, telling the story and reminiscing about the past.

Wouldn’t recommend this book! I haven’t read this author’s other books, but I don’t think I will after this one.

Liked the beginning so I persevered. But by the time I realised how ridiculous the book was, I had gotten too far! The dog part was silly. The character started off like someone you could relate to but was so irritating and unlikeable slowly throughout the book. Some parts were majorly cheesy and cringe worthy! Like when they were out getting drunk. The ending was such a flop. So many loose ends. What happened to the organ donation, Jamaica? Dr Becker? The bucket list and Tyler? Ended so abruptly. Don't read! Unless you want brain numbing, thin plot, illogical storyline and major cheese fest!

This is a good book but I wouldn't say it's a "page turner" or a holiday read. Its a light read, but more of a family drama with small bits of suspense, showing the poverty the Irish are living in, post-war, in Liverpool. Life is definitely portrayed as harsh and difficult, but the way the community stick together, showing integrity and gain some small pleasures and happiness, by the simple things in life, is quite sweet. It has a slow start but I wanted to read on mainly as I grew more curious about the character of Alice. It got better from there on. I'm glad a I persevered. Worth reading if you're haven't got anything on your reading list.

Not too big, just the right size. Has one large compartment for salad. tray with 2 smaller compartments (for croutons, meat etc!) and a small round pot in middle for dressing! great way to keep your lunchtime salad, so it doesn't get soggy! Also like the funky shade of green! happy with this buy. came very quickly.
