3.0 out of 5 stars basic dictionary, 18 Sep 2014

62 pages with an alphabetical index in the back. No English text. Does have a one page bibliography in the back with some English titles, the latest being from 1981-2. Looks like home publishing with a plastic ring spine. The printing, while a typewriter type font, is clean and sharp. Contents include diagrams of the labelled parts of forks, knives, and spoons, examples of said flatware, including some new to me, kitchen utensils, flatware storage devices, and a few utility dishes like a gravy boat. One drawing of each is given with a short text (about 60 words) for each type. About 100 examples of flatware and utensils are shown. I do not read Norwegian, so I cannot say how useful the text is, but the titles are fairly easy to understand, e.g. fonduegaffel is clearly a fondu fork (in the gaffel section with a plain gaffel at the beginning).

Le Chat : Tout le chat : Coffret de 16 albums
Le Chat : Tout le chat : Coffret de 16 albums
by Philippe Geluck
Edition: Paperback
Price: £51.16

5.0 out of 5 stars All there and more, 8 Sep 2014
On the plus side, it has not only all 16 books (2001-2012) in their entirety, but also 6 pages per volume (6 x 8 = 48 pages, a whole 17th book) of comics (1983-2009) not in these 16 books, mainly predating them. On the minus side, the books are normal hardback size, instead of oversized comic-book size. This means the comics have been reduced. Someone with poor eyesight might find this a problem. Other than that, they appear to be a quality production.

Every project starts with photocopy the drawing, colour it, cut it out, and paste it together. There are 13 such 'projects'. So it is just a glorified colouring book. Professionally coloured examples are on the book's cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars very compact, 21 July 2014
It doesn't give the idioms, just the verb forms, but the advantage is that you can actually lug this around very easily, unlike the other books I have. 174 pages can be very thin, light, and sturdy without being tissue.

Sorry, but not the complete series as Sharpe's Challenge and Sharpe' Peril were released after a gap and not included in this set. Both are available in 2-disc sets for a reasonable price (at this time). Other than that, the item is as described, including a map.

This review is from: Crazy Cats (Gift) (Paperback)
On the plus side, it did give the cat breed with each picture. On the minus side, the dimensions are really small - less than half the size of a paperback. Many pictures have wide margins, so the cats can be pretty small. Definitely not good for someone with poor eyesight. A number of pictures rely on trick photography, i.e. a close up of the paw so the rest of the cat is out of proportion. Mostly faces with some backsides for variety. The picture on the cover is representative of the better shots, but a large percentage are ordinary and few caused me to look very long.

Bof! France Funny-Side Up
Bof! France Funny-Side Up
by Anneke Elwes
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

3.0 out of 5 stars so less than fifty pages would be a better estimate as to size, 14 July 2014
Although listed as 212 pages, it has illustrations, wide margins, wide spacing, and large print, so less than fifty pages would be a better estimate as to size. Obviously it is fast reading, but enjoyable. Also included are boxes with colloquial French vocabulary that is mostly available from books devoted to that subject. The text is mainly concerned with explaining the French character. While humorous, one has to ask how much the descriptions are exaggerated since when we went to Paris, everyone was very pleasant with us and pleased by any effort we made to learn or use French. We never had any trouble with rudeness. Also, the French police have started enforcing the traffic regulations, so traffic is now very orderly unlike 10 years ago. (We noticed this ourselves and our driver confirmed it.) This change in Paris is not reflected in the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is definitely impressive and useful, but there are still bugs to work out, 14 July 2014

It is definitely impressive and useful, but there are still bugs to work out. Little things like misspelling hypo as hupo in one place are inconsequential, but the use of only English leads to problems like 'Western plant-bug' not having an explanation/etymology for Rhinocloa forticornis. And if you are searching from the Latin name, then you can find nothing. It is listed as belonging to Hemiptera: Miridae, but the Hemiptera entry does not have Miridae marked in any way and I finally gave up looking for it in the long entry since it would have also been unlikely to yield any further on Western plant-bugs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just racy, 2 July 2014
Although marketed on the racy terms it includes, most of the terms are ordinary, like the departments in a shop, items one might buy in a chemist's, articles of clothing, etc. So it is actually valuable as phrase book and not just for a laugh.

STORY OF THE DRINKING HORN (Publications of the National Museum Studies in Archaeology &)
STORY OF THE DRINKING HORN (Publications of the National Museum Studies in Archaeology &)
by ETTING V
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £26.69

4.0 out of 5 stars history, not a monograph, 26 Jun 2014
157 pages, apparently translated into English by Don Kincaid. Lots of colour photos, a few full page. This book covers the main sources of exquisite horns, but not poorer quality horns like those found in Lithuania. It gives something of an illustrated catalogue of the former. The text is readable, although not exciting, being more a description of the horns along with citations and paraphrases of historical passages that mention drinking horns. If you are wondering about terminology, the book mainly uses the terms tip, mouth, and strap mounts. There is no glossary. I gave it only four stars because the pictures could have been larger and the horn descriptions more technical.
