5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent 2.1 Home Cinema System, 10 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The first thing you'll notice when you get one of these systems is how well it is packed. The speakers and player come in their own cartons within one larger and quite heavy carton with extra protective cardboard sections strategically placed around the sides to protect the contents. First out of the box is the BDS 375 Blu-Ray Disc Receiver which as well as being remarkably lightweight has a very unusual top made out of what appears to be some kind of sunken plastic material glued in place. You certainly won't be taking the top off to peak inside. Next out are the speakers which surprisingly didn't come with any user manual nor is there currently one available on the HK website. Neither the sub-woofer or satellite speakers were the exact same model numbers quoted but as far as I could see they are identical to the specfied ones. Connecting the speakers to the receiver is pretty straightforward as the supplied, rather thin, cables are all colour coded. One point worthy of note here is that the screwed speaker terminals on the back of the receiver are very lightweight. If you want to use a heavier guage wire to connect the satellite speakers, as I did, it's best to connect using 4mm plugs at the receiver end (you can remove the bungs from the centre of the screw terminals to reveal 4mm receptacles). Do note however that the guage of wire you can use is resticted due to the wires having to connect to sprung terminals underneath the satellite speaker's bottom panel. The sub-woofer is connected using the supplied phono lead which also incorporates a trigger cable to make sure the sub switches on when the receiver powers up.

I decided not to use the EzSet/EQ sound calibration facility, which uses an included measuring microphone sited at the primary listening position, instead adjusting the sub volume myself with the aid of a variety of musical extracts and was able to achieve a balance which sounds perfect to my ears between the sub and the satellite speakers. Unless you're mounting the satellites on the wall it's worth spending a few moments optimising their positions and angling as they are capable of remarkably good sound quality over a reasonably wide area considering their modest dimensions.

Video quality from both Blu-Ray and DVD discs is excellent. Potential buyers should note that the player is restricted to playing region B Blu-Rays and Region 2 DVDs although I found that it also played most of my Region 0 DVDs. The FM tuner works fine as long as you feed it with a good quality signal. The on-screen menus and the remote handset are clear and easy to navigate. Audio CDs with CD-Text included will have their album, artist and track names displayed on the connected TV but there is no facility to download missing tags or artwork from the internet. MP3 files with artwork plus track and artist names embedded will have their artwork and details displayed on the TV.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good basic home cinema system, 6 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
First of all I must praise Amazon for their exemplary customer service after they refunded me within 1 day of receiving the HK BDS 330 system back after it developed two faults.

Now onto the review. During the short time I had the system it showed it's potential with some first class video quality from both Blu-Ray and DVD discs. The sound from the two speakers was surprisingly good considering their small size and lightweight construction while the sub provided more than enough low end grunt. I did however find the recommended EzSet/EQ sound calibration facility, which uses the included measuring microphone sited at the primary listening position, a complete waste of time as it produced a result that was far too bass heavy. Using the manual setup and adjusting the sub level myself produced a far more realistic result. Potential buyers should note that the player seems very strict with regard to DVD region coding in that it will only play region 2 discs, I found region 0 (which is supposed to be region free) discs will not play. Other points to note - some of the handset buttons are very hard to read, the speaker terminals on the back of the player are rather lightweight although they look good from a distance, the analog audio output phonos are at a fixed level regardless of the volume control setting which is fine for recording purposes but not so convenient for driving active speakers which had been my original plan, the FM tuner worked fine, updating the firmware was straightforward but time consuming, the on-screen menus are clear and easy to navigate. Audio CDs with CD-Text included will have their album, artist and track names displayed on the connected TV but there is no facility to download missing tags or artwork from the internet. The network connector, if connected to the internet, is only called into play when displaying BD-Live content.

A great set of songs from Joanna, a shame she wasn't able to continue her singing career. Let's hope for better fortunes with her photography career.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing speakers, 18 April 2013

I don't know how these speakers have slipped under the radar, I've never seen them mentioned in any of the regular hifi or PC magazines. I've been a hifi enthusiast for many years and for a while was employed as a hifi specialist by one of the large multi-national consumer equipment manufacturing companies and can state categorically that these speakers are the most amazing I have ever had the pleasure to experience or own. They are also not at all obtrusive so can easily be accomodated without drawing attention to themselves, a handy bonus for many whose partners might prefer audio equipment to be invisible.

I bought my first pair on Ebay and was so impressed that I've just purchased a second brand new pair from Amazon. The first pair were to use with my desktop PC with which they work perfectly and the second pair are to replace my main hifi system speakers which I've been using for 20 years. I find the sound balance in terms of their frequency response to be excellent for a wide range of music from rock through jazz to small scale classical and they are plenty loud enough to fill my living room with sound. They are also not at all critical with regard to positioning in the room and maintain a stable stereo sound over a wide range of listening positions unlike many speakers which are fussy with regard to positioning and only seem to give a good stereo image when you're sitting in the one sweet spot.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best wipes!, 11 Dec 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
For me these are the best of those available in the UK. Most of the others are too wet and need "ringing out" before they can be used, something I'd much rather not have to do, whereas the Prep H wipes are perfect straight from the pack. The pack size also makes it easy to carry with you when necessary.
