5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic addition to the Middle Eastern cookbook market, 6 Aug 2013
Having grown up with a Greek Cypriot father above a Greek restaurant in London, I'm well versed in the cuisine of the Eastern Mediterranean. As such, it's a pleasure to find a book like this - taking the familiar yet adding the author's own personal touch, taste and flair into each and every recipe. Whether it be the duck shawarma, the venison nests with cherry, or the delightful orange salad which lights up the front cover, the flavours used are both nostalgic yet contemporary and fun.

What's more, the photography is fantastic throughout, bringing each recipe to life while the author's background introduction is a fascinating tale of ambivalence; longing for a homeland which has known so much conflict and using cooking as a way to express that feeling. Reading it brought shivers to the neck and an understanding of what the Lebanese might diaspora experience through the medium of food!

5.0 out of 5 stars Scotland's answer to Stieg Larsson, 10 Aug 2011
This review is from: The Sea Detective (Hardcover)
Well written, interesting and complex, Douglas-Home manages to entwine related but different stories to create a very accomplished debut novel, full of suspense and unexpected twists. Clearly potential for more Cal McGill stories to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative, interesting and imaginative, 24 May 2011
Certainly aimed at the layman, this is a fantastic book for everyone, from academic to those with no prior knowledge or interest in the subject.

Well-written and informative text, beautifully illustrated and thoroughly researched, this is a lovely addition to any household and a fantastic conversation piece as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, 14 Dec 2006
Possibly the best album of all time. Kermit has an especially fantastic voice, a cross between an early Cat Stevens and David Gray in his latest album, Life in Slow Motion. However, I think his rendition of One More Night till Christmas perhaps eclipses both these two great artists. I had heard rumours of a contract with Sony BMG and a solo career, but have no idea why it hasn't materialised. The song Love Is Gone is also an absolute classic, and brings tears to my eyes, especially the second version Track 18, which is perhaps the stand-out song of the entire album (which is saying a lot). Michael Caine also impressed me, and although not perhaps with quite the same talent as Kermit, or even Tiny Tim (whom reminds me of a young Aled Jones, and I believe has the potential to be a massive start when he is a bit older) he fits the role perfectly and I could listen to him sing all day. All in all, probably the greatest movie soundtrack of all time. How this didn't win an oscar I will never know. Buy it...

This is by far and away the definitive study on malaria, a fantastic book. I could hardly put it down.
