Realistic, comprehensive and informative. Author tone is realistic and practical as the book acknowledges how expensive travel in Iceland is but offers much advice on how to maximize your trip to Iceland.

Only Owls and Bloody Fools Fly at Night (Bomber crews)

5.0 out of 5 stars Wizzard prang old boy!, 26 July 2013

Very engaging, first hand experience of a veteran and hero of Bomber Command. Unflappable, competent idiosyncratic portrayal of the quintessential Englishman who was probably too senior (as a professional) to receive a DSO. His nighttime ride through the cone and the radar directed flak was a gripping read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Truly a hurricane ..., 26 July 2013

Slim, hagiographic novella about a little known but significant part of the air war over Europe in WW2. Great encouragement for the men of Bomber Command who still lack a campaign medal.

4.0 out of 5 stars A dish better eaten cold ..., 26 July 2013

Good to see Geography as the central focus of a contemporary overview about real world issues, but I don't think the perspective is as startling as the title indicates. Loved the broad brush overview of international analysis and landscape description. Good for the discipline.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Crusades through Arab Eyes, 13 Sept. 2010
Fantastic introduction to Medieval Arab world and the vicissitudes of power in the Levant with implications for the Middle East. A complex topic sketched out efficiently and comprehensively using a judicious selection of quotations from contemporary chronicles. An insightful and often breathtaking view of European hubris messing about in the region. Well written with a balanced perspective.

Samarkand
by Amin Maalouf
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Smarkand, 13 Sept. 2010
This review is from: Samarkand (Paperback)
An entertaining fictional account of the life and times of Omar Kayham set against the historical background of the Seljuk Turks. Wide ranging throughout the Middle East and the Levant and provides a good historical perspective on the spread of Islam, the Crusades and the Mongol incursion. A useful background sketch to the social and cultural context of a companion volume, "The Crusades through Arab Eyes".
