5.0 out of 5 stars An essential for anyone in the world of IM&T projects, 9 Jan 2014
The world of IT is littered with failed projects from small to colossal in ambition and cost. This book brings a perspective that not only explains why, but provides a language and frameworks to begin to rethink how we should approach the fast changing digital world in the context of the 'want to change' public services. Once we have mastered this understanding, we will then have a chance at delivering on ambitions that will begin to deliver the improvements that still remain largely promises. This is a very well written, deeply evidenced, accessible book for anyone remotely interested in this interface; civil servants, IT geeks, IM&T directors, public service managers and executives - anyone contemplating IT solutions, in the middle of IT solutions, teaching IT, consulting in IT...

5.0 out of 5 stars Laotop battery, 27 Sep 2011
Dell batteries by Dell prove that the Dell business model is sell the laptop cheaply, but remember to use low life batteries so that the customer that doesn't explore the market, will keep Dell in profit by buying their batteries at extraordinary prices. LaptopMate - great value.

Every CEO and manager should have to read this. Thinking about an MBA? Read this. Wondering what management is about? Read this. Want to be a manager? Read this. Want to be a management consultant. This is a must. About to invest in external consultants - spend money on this book first. I don't believe it to be blinkered. It is in fact very honest.

5.0 out of 5 stars CPD for managers, 18 May 2009
I agree with a previous reviewer that this book and John Seddon's clear and logical explanation of systems thinking will instantly devalue the middle manager's sense of self meaning and reason for existence. The NHS is periodically mentioned in the book, but everything in the book is generically applicable, including to the NHS. The style is clear, enagaging and refreshing. I am inspired to take the systems approach further and at the same time deeply frustrated as I face the blank looks of middle managers.

The reality is that the recipes work and work very well.
The books are very well written.
The TV series of course add that little extra.
Worth every penny.

4.0 out of 5 stars Service in heathcare - another way to view it and deliver it, 30 Dec 2008
I work in the NHS. I picked this up out of curiosity. There is a great deal we can learn from the US system, even allowing for all its faults, and this book contains lots that is engaging and worth pursuing, assuming the NHS organisations are ready for the challenges. My copy is full of highlights and notes in the margins. If you have even a the slightest interest in healthcare delivery, this is an easy read with value.
