2.0 out of 5 stars commend the imaginative story but..., 8 Dec 2013
This review is from: Seven Psychopaths [DVD] (DVD)
it's imaginatively plotted and superficially interesting but the jokes are few and far between, and most of the half=hitting gags just start to annoy after a while. in bruges was a better film, Brendan Gleeson carries Mcdonaghs very irish, very cynical 'life's just a f-ing joke let's ruin everything' sort of humour. by the end I was bored stiff, though I didn't like the guard and in bruges that much I coped with them a lot better. rent it first not a keeper

4.0 out of 5 stars A good little read, 5 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Steve Waters explains elegantly and straight-forwardly different components that make up the construction of a play. Exploring such things as the conception of ideas, characterization, time, the importance of acts, dialogue and different ways of approaching drama (as journalist, as poet, as iconoclast, as sociologist...etc). There are about a dozen useful insights and tips which would stop you from making amateur mistakes and enable you to enrich your script a bit more. It's not extremely in depth but you'll have to browse lots of books on the subject anyway. It's better than Lajos Elegri's art of writing drama, which for me was a little simplistic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Billy Monk... interesting, 5 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Billy Monk (Hardcover)
Billy Monk is something of a legend in Cape Town; a photographer, a boxer, a bouncer, a great friend, a great lover...

there's some interesting details on his life and his relationship with photography. the photos are good quality and well presented, chronicling nights of debauchery, dance and fun in the Cape Town caverns of the 60s. Sailors, chinamen, young girls, young lads, businessmen, old folks, workers all slowly descending into drunken chaos. Try and get a look at it first hand before buying online because the pictures aren't particularly overwhelming for how expensive it is. But it's a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars blown away. great game, 27 Nov 2012
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Borderlands 2 (PS3) (Video Game)
Really enjoy playing this game. It's characters are idiosyncratic and likeable, the script is well-crafted and the game's incredibly violent gameplay is glazed with black humour from start to finish: I particularly love setting alight the 'rat' bandits (cannibals who live in icey sewers) just to hear them scream "I smeeelll dellliccious!!!".
The side missions are great, from having an awkward pizza party with claptrap to finding stashes of sought-after weapons guarded by impossible bosses. The landscapes are beautiful; ranging from old railway stations to icey ports to caverns to lush highlands. The weapon variation is endless. You can even modify grenades to have them hoam in and then explodes into a several flashes of lightning. I found the story-mode a bit cliche: you join rebels facing an all-powerful bad guy. Nevertheless this game has sustained my interest, uncharacteristically, for hours and hours. It has a quirkiness, a style and a world of it's own that I've never experienced in any other game (excluding B1). Really recommend this.

2.0 out of 5 stars mediocre...better than standard ipod headphones though, 28 May 2012
They are okay. The sound can be tinny at times and after a few months the left ear phone stopped playing music. So basically I'm sitting here listening through the right ear phone all the time. Which is annoying. One good point I have to say is they are quite sturdy and come with a small pouch to put them in. They isolate noise very well, but if you play at louder volumes (like 80%) then everyone can hear you. They seem a decent pair, but for the sound quality I would look for something else.

4.0 out of 5 stars nice, 4 April 2012
I enjoyed this film. It's charming, simplistic and humorous. It's very hard to dislike without being called an unappreciative moron. What I liked was how the film took the seriousness out of modern acting and remembered the good old days of Hollywood where actors just needed the right face and the right smile to make good films. As a whole it is a masterpiece, though I don't think Jean Dujardin was particularly skilled, or original enough to win an Oscar; though he did fit, and perform his role perfectly. Overall, it is a very original picture. I think you should rent it to watch it though, because you wouldn't want to see it again and again. Unless you're a collector of films that is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Game but unsure if it will beat COD., 29 Oct 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Prior to it's release, and looking at the adverts and a bit of gameplay I was blown away by the graphics, movement, realism etc. And I have to say B3 has definately delivered in that respect. EA have gone great strides to close the first-person shooter gap between everyone and COD. Online game modes are so much fun, and will steal hours of your life depending on how nerdy you are- there are vehicles, full scale battles- including beach invasions and jet fights. The actual campaign takes you through a series of linear missions- all beautifully designed, with the action being completely full-on throughout. B3 takes you on a tour of all aspects of virtual warfare, from close-quarters to fire fights to tank battles to dogfights in the skies (the later being absolutely amazing, most realistic console experience I have ever had). B3 really is very complete in that respect, and I thoroughly recommend it. Unfortunately, this is not the perfect FPS people have been waiting for- graphics are, and I'm sorry to say this, inconsistent at times- there ARE glitches, enemies in the campaign are quite useless to be honest- and can be easily picked off. One thing that really bugged me was the fact your comrades could stand in the open and open fire, still alive- while you have to duck behind cover to avoid getting machine gunned to bits. With regards to COD I'm unsure. COD still stays on the pedestal for me, partly because of it's history and the community it's made, plus all the memories (ZOMBIES MODE does sway me I have to say). My advice will be to wait for the new COD to come out to compare reviews and then buy which ever's better- or if you have the cash- get both! Why not?

If you want something more realistic, better graphics and focuses more on experiencing all the aspects of war- get B3.

If you want a more fun, less serious, slightly adolescent FPS classic series with a bigger following- go for COD.

In terms of online gameplay I'm unsure who wins, I haven't played the new COD- but the B3 online modes get it the 5 star fun rating for me!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A GAME EVERYONE MUST OWN!!!, 27 Oct 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Making it short and snappy- there are two types of people who will buy this game:

People who bought the PS2 game: The graphics are not just in HD, some of the movement is updated and the sound quality is much clearer (if that makes any sense). Most of the graphical changes focus on the main characters, such as ICO- and they look even more beautiful than before. It's worth just playing it all over again because the game experience is so unique, plus it's a piece of art that I just had to own for the PS3. One con is that the backgrounds and landscapes, building walls etc. are quite inferior to the games now which kind of bothered me- but you have to look past that. Just buy it again for the experience, especially if you threw away the old one with your PS2.

People new to the 2 games: people who haven't heard of these two games or haven't tried them should definitely buy this game, despite being classics the elements of beauty and STUDIO GHIBLI style, Japanese mythology that surrounds the stories are really quite unique in the commercial gaming world. These games were deemed masterpieces in their day- and when you play them you should respect that they do not have the latest graphics engine technology. (It's like when people play pacman, they don't care about the graphics because they love it so much). When you've got the BUG from these games you should go and grab THE LAST GUARDIAN, the next instalment- the graphics look amazing- (story is a bit vague however).

Honestly recommend, especially for collectors and those that value the artistic side of gaming.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dicaprio's best role., 7 July 2011
Keeping It short.

Really good feel-good film, Dicaprio was amazing as a disabled kid (which he was nominated for an Oscar for) and the whole sleepiness of the town and the bizarreness of it's characters and their situations was so quirky and likeable. The whole film is quite light, and laid-back with not too much emphasis on characters dilemmas. It's a pocket sized cinematic masterpiece, and for me, a cult classic: any time you feel down you could just watch this and jump out your door and love life. It doesn't have the complexities and shine-factor of a 5 star but it's a five-star of the four-stars let's put it that way.
