Edition: Hardcover
Price: 65.00

5.0 out of 5 stars lovely set, 8 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a really nice deluxe set that comes in a solid slipcase. all the covers are cloth with fantastic art work on them. the paper quality is very good and strong and as I bought this at a reduced price of 31 I got a bargain at about only 7.70 per hardback book. This is an excellent set to go on any Tolkien collectors book shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars nice little copy of the classic, 8 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a lovely little book in hardback. the cover reproduces the classic 1st edition Tolkien cover but with images from the films. I would have liked the book to be bigger with this clever movie cover but as its the only version available I bought it as it was a great price (only 5.69) Overall, one for the collectors who want another copy of the Hobbit without breaking the bank.

4.0 out of 5 stars good film but faulty disc!!, 7 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Enjoyed the film. very good modern take on the 22 year old original Arnie movie and more like the book that that version. I originally bought an ex-rental off blockbuster not long after its release a year ago, it had the fault and after the replacement copy did the same I gave up and had my money back. the fault is that about 1 hr 35 mins into the film it freezes. and nothing responds- eject, off, etc, the only way to re-set it is to turn the player off at the socket. I'd hoped that now its a year since release that Sony would have sorted this universal fault (see other reviews) but unless I got an old copy then sony obviously haven't bothered to 'reKall' all the faulty discs. this is very annoying as the extended version is only available on blu ray so its not like I can get just a normal DVD unless I am happy with the shorty theatrical version. Sony really need to sort this.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book in an amazing series, 14 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Fallen (The Enemy) (Hardcover)
book 5 in the enemy series sees the return of the main kids from book 1, maxie, blue etc. they arrive at the natural history museum to deal with the aftermath of when paul released the sickos at the end of bk 3- the fear. theres plenty of gore and action though less than the other books. the story develops more and we meet the fallen who are something totally new. there are many sad parts as higson really makes you care for these kids and all they are dealing with. it ends on a cliffhanger so book 6 cannot come quick enough. overall its a great read, for me its the 4th best book in the series, mainly due to my favourite characters not being in it (sam the kid and Ed) all 5 books have been amazing and the story is developing more from just the survival story of the 1st few books. bring on book 6 soon Mr Higson.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best skulduggery yet!, 3 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
just finished last stand of dead men, easily the best skulduggery book yet and it sets everything up for the finale next september. i wont give anything away but as usual its full of great action and humour, with deaths, suprises, shocks and emotion. better than potter, than artemis, than percy jackson and better than his dark materials in my opinion, basically the best childrens book series ever.

3.0 out of 5 stars the 'best' in a poor series, 12 Mar 2013
I'm a man not a teenage girl so I know this series (book and film) is not aimed at me but I have watched (or been forced to watch) the whole series, my main problems throughout have been the awful acting (especially the main female lead)the stupid take on 'vampires' (sparkle in daylight, superhero type powers)the lack of vampire FANGS (did we ever see one in 5 movies?)and its poor, cringy romance- which at times was more scary than a proper horror film
This final film saw plenty more action with some ok humour but was again poor with its romance lines and acting. The cop-out with the battle being a vision and not real was a let down, for a book/film (in the adventure genre at least) to be truly great people have to die and make sacrifices, seeing Carlise, Jasper and the wolf (Sam?) die during the fight to protect Renesme made for a tense, powerful scene, then to have it all not happen and the 2 armies part and there be no big finale/battle and everyone live happily ever after was pathetic. The only good thing Meyer did was make a book genre (YA) produce alot of good series than may not have been published if not for her success (such as City of Bones, Ashes, Divergent, hush hush and Hunger Games - all far better in romance and action than twilight)

4.0 out of 5 stars good but should have been so much better, 12 Mar 2013
I've given this 4 stars more for a love of Middle Earth and the return there than for the film which is only a 3 star. I have studied and read everything Tolkien for over 25 yrs and loved the LOTRs movies (though there where a few small faults with these thay were small enough to overlook)
With AUJ you get the feeling PJ has fallen for Lucas SW prequel problem - bigger is better.
But first the good parts
The whole feel and look was great we really have returned to Middle Earth, the costumes and way eveything and everyone looked was great (apart from Thorins lack of beard) the party at the start was very good and to me not overlong, the 2 back story scenes were great the added content was all fine and the pace of the film was spot on. The acting was very good and the riddles in the dark was excellent.
The bad
The trolls -I always hated this in the book as it just does not fit into the bigger world we know in the LOTR, all the talk about how to cook the dwarves was annoying, though the added fight scene was good.
Radagast - overall he was good and the Dol Guldur part was needed as in film 2 we will see Gandalf deal with this so it needed introducing in film 1, But the bunny sledge- this is PJ being 'bigger is better' but it was just silly more Narnia than Middle_Earth, why couldn't Radagast just ride a pony/horse??, also when he meets the company he acts all 'stoned' and funny (insect on tongue) if he was suppossed to be funny the humour failed completely. And finally how quickly did he get from Mirkwood to the Trollshaws?? it would have taken weeks to make this journey!!
The fight scenes
To much CGI to big and over the top. compare Moria to goblin town, Moria- all orcs are men in costumes(at Balins tomb) so look real, the first battle has the Fellowship against 1 troll and maybe 25-30 orcs, a realist number and its a hard fought gritty battle were we feel real danger for the heroes. Now to goblin town - to many goblins and once the fight starts (and all the dwarves amazingly manage to pick up their own weapons!) PJ goes into overload with 'lets see how many cgi goblins we can kill' theres Oin swinging his staff around and taking out as many goblins in 5 seconds as Gimli took out in the battle of the Hornburg-OTT, then theres the use of the wooden rail as a lance used by Dwalin, running at the goblins and again knocking dozens of them into the abyss, Kili deflecting arrows with his short sword??, the ladder being used as a ram and finally the daft 'that'll do it' last line from the camp king and the OTT endless fall down the cavern on that wooden structure- were no one got hurt!!!!, it was all to OTT and this took out any tension or threat from the scene which could have been amazing-in contrast the riddles scene managed both tension and humour well.
The last fight- this was better and had more of a danger and threat that the OTT goblin fight but PJ still manages to spoil it with unrealism, the main failing being the trees and how the wargs manages to knock one down after another and they fell like dominos and the dwarves managed to jump from tree to tree until only the last tree was left - which amazingly managed to just stay rooted and not fall over the edge! finally it gets gritty and Thorin runs to fight Azog and we all expect a good fight but Thorin gets taken out on the first clash-all that bulid up for nothing, I Know this scene was more about Bilbo showing his courage but a better fight from thorin would have added to the tension. Also not killing Azog was a mistake as he served his purpose as the main villain to fight in film 1 (like Lurtz in FOTR) and has no part in films 2-3 with the intro of Smaug and Bolg.
I really have been very critical for a film I've given 4 stars to, for me its a case of wanting to love it but due to how PJ went OTT far to many times I loved a few parts and the return to middle-earth but feel very very let down with the things mentioned. I saw it 3 times at the cinema (so am jusding the film not the extras before anyone moans about a review b4 the dvd release)but will wait for the extended edition to buy. I really hope PJ learns from all the comments and sees this films failing and does not go OTT in parts 2 and 3.

The Sacrifice (The Enemy)
The Sacrifice (The Enemy)
by Charlie Higson
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 12.99

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best teenage series ever (though I'm 40!), 25 Dec 2012
I've just read the 4 books that make up this series (of 7 I believe) in just over a week, with many late late nights involved-they are simply that gripping you cannot put them down. The violence and action scenes are intense and very graphic so they are not for the faint hearted. The Characters in the series are very likable (especially the main 4 here- Sam, The Kid, Ed and Shadowman)and the fact that Higson seems to have no problem killing anyone off at any point in the books (not just near the end) means you are always worried for them when danger nears. The new development with the sickos is interesting and makes you wonder were the illness came from (parasits, aliens??)and if it could be cured. Its going to be a very very long wait until Sept 2013 when book 5 comes out (hopefully)

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than the older movies, 27 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
this new version is far better than the older ones, Tobys peter parker was always to wet, while garfields is much more like Peter should be. Having gwen instead of MJ at the beginning is also better, as for the film, yes it was annoying seeing 'the bite' and origin again but its still a great movie with far better effects and action that the older movies. I personally hope that Spider-man, Batman and others will one day be made like Bond movies in that fact that we don't get a re-boot/origin every time a new actor comes in but they just continue with the stories-after all we all know these iconic charactors origins. In fact after The Avengers its my favourite film this year (so far-Hobbit still to come)
