The History of RAF Aerobatic Teams from 1920: Smoke on ... Go!
The History of RAF Aerobatic Teams from 1920: Smoke on ... Go!

Absolutely the best RAF aerobatic teams history written to date. Not one to read from start to finish but essential reference material, to dip in and out of when needed. Image selection is generally top-drawer, too - maybe just a few more images would have added more visual impact but I can't go any higher than five stars and that's what it gets....!!

...Satch just goes from strength-to-strength. This is an excellent album with just one or two minor flaws. Inspiration-wise, it takes its cues from many of Satriani's previous albums but adds lots of new twists, the title track's time signature being just one of them (I won't spoil it!). It's so close to being five-star but for the odd moment here and there when you think a really special lead moment's coming, only for Joe to fall back into pentatonic cliche. Generally, though, terrific and recommended to all Satch fans. Highlights? Definitely the title track, 'Can't Go Back' and 'Jumpin' In'/Jumpin' Out' Lowlights? Not so keen on 'Shine on American Dreamer' but even that has a satisfying solo section and a hummable melody. Sonic surprises? Definitely! Another top-class addition to the Satch legacy...go grab it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh Dear..., 13 July 2012

I'd been putting off buying this DVD for ages as I'd heard it wasn't exactly of the best quality. But, you know what, I gave in. I'm a huge Air Fair fan and just had to have this but, once it arrived, told myself to try and watch it with an open mind.

The 2010 Air Fair remains, as things stand, the last such show held at Biggin Hill. It deserved a worthy DVD to give it a proper send-off. This just isn't it.

I like classical music but I don't like it played almost incessantly in place of aircraft sounds. Add in the wobbly framing, the horrible and inconsistent editing, the hugely over-saturated colours, the under-use of Brendan O Brien (whose commentary, when it's allowed to come through, is excellent), the vacuous ditz who accompanies him now and again and who seems to be switching off and almost falling asleep during some of the interviews and the impression's really not good.

Anything else? Yep. Nothing wrong with displaying aircraft data on the screen (name, wing span etc) but, please, get it right. Not just technically right but grammatically right. No excuse for stupid errors like 'engine' (singular) when there's more than one engine, misspelling 'Commander' and misspelling pilots' names when they'll be either in the souvenir programme or just a Google away. I've awarded two stars because some of the footage is still watchable and, in the case of the Battle of Britain setpiece, quite good. But, overall, this is a very amateurish product and only really worth buying if, like me, you have to have it to complete a collection, relive some of the memories of a fantastic show or use it for research, etc.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, 22 Feb 2012
It pains me to write this as I'm a huge airshow fan and, consequently, Farnborough still represents something quite special - even though the show's deteriorated a lot in recent years - but this is an awful DVD. The earlier entries in this series are fantastic and cover each year very well, with a wide variety of aircraft shown. This shows, at best, random snippets from each event and there's a lot of repetition - the F-16 and the Super Hornet crop up a lot, for example. Each year's flying highlights are generally avoided in favour of lengthy interviews and ground footage - fine on a full-length DVD dedicated to a single event, but this is effectively meant to be a "best-of" package...

Up until the late 1990s, Farnborough was still pulling in some really special aircraft and the flying displays were slick and intense. This DVD is, quite simply, a bit of a waste of time. It could have been great but thanks to its very limited content, horrible editing and apparent lack of care, it's one for completists only. And even they might not like it too much... :-(

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful!, 15 Dec 2010

This is a collection of B-sides and rarities and the fact it's better than the last three 'proper' Def Leppard albums says it all. From the crushing, middle-Eastern flavoured Desert Song, to the high-energy Action and a whole host of other rockers, ballads and curiosities, this is Def Leppard at their very best. Essential.

...I just had to write a few words about this guy as I saw him support Joe Satriani last night and he was spectacular! Think Gary Moore meets Eric Johnson - fiery fretwork action and mainly pentatonic, but with tone to die for! Purely based on last night's performance I'm going to pick this disc up asap: if he's as good in the studio as he is in the live arena, this is going to be one hell of an album!!
