AS Psychology For AQA Specification B
AS Psychology For AQA Specification B
by Erika Cox
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars Book for old specification, 4 Mar 2011
Erika Cox's books are well written, but anyone wishing to purchase this book should be aware that it is written for the old specification. A level specifications were changed from 6 modules to 4 just over two years ago (first teaching in 2009) and exam boards used this as an opportunity to make changes to subject content. As far as psychology is concerned, there were some new requirements that applied to all psychology specifications (e.g. more on the biological approach). Some topic areas were dropped, new ones added and existing ones tweaked. You need to be aware of this if you decide to purchase this book and ensure it is not your only source of reference when preparing for your exams.

This is one of two textbooks available for the AQA B specification (the other one is published by Hodder). This textbook has the advantage that it's endorsed by AQA, so pay very careful attention to the examiner's stips and the hints that are in the boxes at the sides of the pages. It's a very detailed book, so not for everyone. I find that my stronger students tend to prefer this book. The Inferential stats in the Methods section is incredibly detailed, albeit well written - experience of exams and exemplar material so far suggests that this level of detail is not going to be required in exams. However as it's in their textbook, unles you're a gambler, you may well interpret this as meaning you should know it. Impossible in the time available unless you really love stats. We need the specification to be more explicit about what they require for stats please.

This is one of two books available for the AQA psychology B specification (the other one is published by Nelson Thornes). It's easy to read and therefore good to use as a means of consolidating what's been covered in lessons so far. I would describe this book as more student friendly than the Nelson thornes book. However, my students are very divided in their opinions - some love this one, some prefer the Nelson Thornes one. I prefer the Nelson Thornes one for its detail, Examiner's tips and the hints (very useful to help focus revision classes). Having both if you can is best.

This is one of two textbooks currently available for the AQA B specification (the other one is published by Nelson Thornes and is endorsed by AQA). The style of writing in this textbook makes it more readable than the Nelson Thornes one so it's good to use for consolidation after covering a particular section in lessons. This textbook is set out in more-or-less the exact order (and using the same titles) as the specification (the Nelson Thornes one is not - some sections have been rolled together and the order of presentation is different). There are useful "How psychology works" sections at the end of chapters (but only if you do them and have them marked with feedback), but no practice exam questions. Overall, I like this textbook because its readable, but the Nelson Thornes one has other features this one doesn't (exam questions, examiner's tips, precise and very detailed, more appealing dimensions) so my recommendation is to buy both if you can.

The Nelson Thornes books are endorsed by AQA and this is one of only two available for the AQA B specification (the other one is published by Hodder). In terms of information, this book is very "dense" so it is much more a reference book than a reader (the Hodder one is easier to read). However, being endorsed by AQA means that even if students aren't given this textbook, every teacher should have one and use it to inform their teaching. The examiner's tips are excellent, and the practice exam questions at the end of each chapter and at the end of the book are extremely useful. The book is also well illustrated with plenty of photographs. I have found that my stronger students like this book, but weaker ones tend to prefer the Hodder one.
