I never feel compelled to write reviews for games, but for COD: Black Ops i almost feel obliged.
Campaign: IMO it's a typical COD campaign with the usual "set pieces" where you need to get past a certain point to stop the flood of enemies. The campaign has an array of added features to keep you entertained, and will probably have you going back for more (flying the gunship down a Vietcong river!). There are also a nice selection of new weapons to get your teeth into with the explosive crossbow, dragon's breath shotgun, and the memorable minigun when escaping the russian labour camp.
Overall the campaign is good (if not a little disjointed due to cut scenes), and definitely holds up against previous COD stories. I've read a lot of reviews criticising the visuals but i think people are expecting something that is now outwith the capability of the xbox 360, and IMO the visuals are satisfactory.
Multiplayer: Hard. Guns have more recoil, which means you can't just point and hold down the trigger expecting to take someone out. Maps are more open, most buildings have several doorways which i think has resulted in less camping (good!!), and faster paced gameplay.
New implemented COD points gets the thumbs up as well, as you level up, new guns etc are unlocked but you need to spend your hard earned points in order to use them. This means you need to spend wisely in order to progress effectively and definitely gives the multiplayer experience a new dimension.
IMO all the gripes and complaints from previous CODs have been addressed here, and what Treyarch have managed to do is create a balanced (apart from care packages), enjoyable multiplayer. Good selection of weapons, perks have been well arranged, maps are excellent and there isn't a fleet of enemy air support above you after 20s of a match. Spawns are a bit iffy but we'll see if Treyarch sort that, and despite what i've read, i've had no problem with hit detection or lag.
I think this game in terms of both campaign and multiplayer is COD fine tuned, nothing ground breaking in terms of graphics or game engine, but definitely a marked improvement on previous installments.
