5.0 out of 5 stars Exact replacement, simple to fit, 29 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a simple replacement blade for various Flymo mowers. I am a rank amateur gardener, who thinks mowing the lawns twice a week makes a big difference, which is actually seems to. I've got a Venturer 320 which - when I ordered this blade and measured up means the blade is 32cm I.e. 320mm. I somehow convinced myself there were 2 blades in the box which I thought was a real bargain, but checking my order when I opened the box it's clear there should only be one blade.

Having recovered from that disappointment, all I needed to do was swap the old blade for the new one. This involves using the plastic tool supplied with the mower for nodding the bolt underneath which keeps the blade in place, so worth tracking this down before swapping blades, although a large spanner/wrench would suffice, I'm sure. Changing old for new took about 2 minutes. There is a gap between the centre of the new blade and the nut, but it tightens fine and also mows fine. My old blade was battered to death so the new one makes quite a difference. It's quite solid and gets on with the job in hand without a fuss.

ASICS GT-2170 Running Shoes (2E)
ASICS GT-2170 Running Shoes (2E)

5.0 out of 5 stars Continuing excellence, 26 July 2012

The latest shoe in the Asics 21xx range, the 2170 continues to provide excellent, comfortable support for long distance runners. I need a wide fitting so the 2E width is perfect for me. I bought these and then ran 17 miles straight out of the box with no blisters or rubbing on the soles of my feet. The colours could be more interesting but I don't wear them for fashion so I don't care. Not cheap, but you are paying for quality. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still a great buy after all these years, 26 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have been buying Samba trainers since the mid 80s and they are still the essential trainer for indoor 5-a-side football. Perfect for playing on sprung wooden floors they are light, comfortable and have a classic design. Whilst not for outdoor use or even astro-turf, they are exactly what the regular indoor player needs, lasting several years - depending on use! The great thing about the leather version is that you can wear them immediately for a game and not worry about getting blisters as they are really supple - not something you can say about every football trainer. I tried the blue suede version once or twice through the year, but the black leather version is the real deal. 27 years and counting!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great space opera for young adults, 5 July 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I may be doing the author a dis-service here, but I thought this was targetted at young adults. Whilst it's a rip-roading, gung-ho space opera, there is no swearing (apart from one very mild one), no sex and not much violence - certainly suitably for teenagers who've read Harry Potter.

The plot concerns RJ Stone who having set off for the stars in the 22nc century is awoken from cryogenic sleep 12,00 years later to find a galaxy populated by humans, "uplifted" intelligent animals and sentient AIs. The future is all rather marvellous and friendly - teleportation using wormholes, no violence or money worries. There are some good ideas here and although the prose is space-opera it's well-handled. Credulity may be stretched as RJ is asigned as the (nominal) captain of a new faster-than-light ship with a crew of thousands and becomes involves in an adventure on a far-flung planet; and the characters maybe cliches for the most part (especially the baddies). But the mix of human, animal and computer-based beings works well and there are nice touches ("medichines" are the nano-tech devices that fix bodies).

There are als knowing nods to well known SF books and authors - I noted touches of Larry Niven, Richard Morgan, Joe Haldeman and Ursula Le Guin to name but a few.

It's certainly set up for a sequel at the end - hope that doesn't class as a spoiler. Don't expert a work of art, but if it's your bad it speeds along.

Lionel Asbo: State of England
Lionel Asbo: State of England

2.0 out of 5 stars Nasty and snide, a real fall from grace, 3 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have always been a fan of Amis with Money: A Suicide Note, London Fields and Time's Arrow his best in my opinion. I've not been that keen on his recent works (although I still read all his fiction books) and found The Pregnant Widow boring and bloated.

Lionel Asbo is a real drop in standards. The plot - such as it is - concerns Lionel Asbo (a thug who wins the lottery) and his dysfunctional family, including Des (his nephew) and Grace (Lionel's mother). The focus of the action is on the inter-relationships between these three main characters, but Grace is only a bit-part player really. Lionel wins 140m on the lottery and the bulk of the book looks at the impact this has on his life and the lives of his family and friends.

Now the book is about money and class. But it just reads as so dumbed down in places it doesn't quality as satire, it just reads badly. Example: when Des gets his degree it is spelled out explicity why a 2:2 is called a Desmond. Why? And there is a fascination with tabloid newspapers that Amis returns to again and again. Why? And although it is interesting to have our attention drawn to glottal stops early on, he keeps reminding us again and again by repeating words as they are sounded out by Lionel "Duck. Duck-cuh." Why can't he just use Irvine Welsh's trick of writing as as it's said?

My other main complaint about this book is that it is nasty and snide. Snide about poor people. Snide about old people. Uncaring about violence, death and early-onset dementia. And I didn't find any redemption in the conclusion.

There are the usual touches of Amis's literary dexterity and wordplay and I guess there is an overarching metaphor about the financial crisis sitting in there somewhere, but to be honest it left such a bad taste in my mouth I couldn't be bothered to think about it in any depth.

I'd have to think carefully before buying his next book and I find that very sad.

Star That Fell (Picture Ladybirds)
Star That Fell (Picture Ladybirds)
by Karen Hayles
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful tale for young children, 26 Jun 2012
This is a wonderful story for children aged between 2 and 5. Beautifully illustrated it tells the story of the star that fell and the various animals that find it. Eventually it ends up with Maddie, a young girl who must face returning the star to its rightful place in the sky. Easy to read (5 minutes tops) its ending still makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck just remembering it - simple yet genuinely moving.

White is the Moon

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless and vivid, 26 Jun 2012
This review is from: White is the Moon (Paperback)
A wonderful book that we read to both our children on a very regular basis for several years each. Beautifully illustrated and using the different times of the day combined with animals and colours it works as a children poem spread over half a dozen double pages, but stands alone as a small but perfectly formed work. We're keeping it for the grandchildren! Worth tracking down if you have a two or three-year-old.

It transpired that the rechargeable batteries in our portable home-phone had died so I ordered these as a replacement. They arrived very quicky - 2nd day after ordering and went straight into the phone where they are now fully charged. Can't say how long they will last, but for now I am extremely satisfied.

5.0 out of 5 stars A worthy prequel and as good as the original, 30 May 2012
This review is from: Skagboys (Hardcover)
As other reviews have noted, this is an excellent return to form by Irvine Welsh. I thought Trainspotting was a wonderful book - well written, funny, dark, intelligent. I've bought most of his other books on the strength of this, but have been disappointed by them all to a greater or lesser extent when compared to his first. As for Porno - the sequel to Trainspotting - I have read this and thought it was "ok" but to be honest can't remember much about it now (a few years later).

Skagboys is very different and I think it compares favourably to Trainspotting. Using the same set of characters and mostly the same format it looks at Renton, Sickboy, Spud, Begbie et al around the mid eighties and specifically how most of them turn to heroin use and it's impact on them and others. It's told with great panache and uses Welsh's now-familiar transliterating of Leith slang for most of the characters. As with Trainspotting chapters are not always told by Renton, although most are. And as with Trainspotting this is not for the faint-hearted - I felt physically sick on three seperate occasions reading this.

I've never used drugs, but Welsh seems to know what he's talking about and the tawdry scenes of drug use were so descriptive I almost felt I was using myself. He also gives us a lot of information about why Renton acts like he does - even if Renton himself is not really sure. Fans of Begbie (and I am one) will be pleased to know he is still very much a big part of the story, as is Sickboy. The trick here is to make us like and care for people who do such horrible things to themselves and each other and Welsh succeeds admirably, even thought we know that everyone is in Trainspotting and how they act in that. But this book spurred me to revisit Trainspotting and you can't really see the gap between the end of Skagboys and the start of Trainspotting.

Fans of the original who have perhaps been put off (like me especially by Porno) will not be disappointed. It makes the whole idea of a prequel vital and essential.

This is a perfect cheap solution if you need a kettle lead. I needed it for my powered monitor for accoustic gigs - the old lead had mysteriously disappeared during our last gig. This was delivered very quickly and works perfectly. If you need one and it meets your requirements then it's a no-brainer.
