3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I was expecting., 31 Dec. 2013

I was attracted by Africa but the book was all about herself and her confusion and the few people she meets along the way. Pretty grim part of Africa, barren, inhospitable with little habitation. Clearly somewhere to be avoided.
At the time she was there it was relatively peaceful with only rumblings of trouble but since then it has erupted with the Islamic threat and suggestions it will be the new Al Qaeda front.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed the read and now know a bit more about that part of Africa.

I was looking for the final story in the Enzo Files but enjoyed this one just as much. Perhaps this is the start of a new series?
His style never changes. Paints graphic pictures of the settings and his characters are always strong. Never gives a clue to the final twist. One of the few authors who retains his quality as his popularity increases.
Just waiting for the next one now.

The writing continues to be of the highest standard. Fascinating, wonderful scene setting which conjures up the very soul of the area he is describing. Always intriguing and never fails to contain mystery with a twist at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars The promotion said "as good as ever" and it surely is., 4 Sept. 2013

The older James Lee gets, the better his writing. He brings the setting into such beautiful clarity and his philosophy is always absorbing and interesting. So much so, you just want to go there. My America is James` America.
Dave, Clete and now the two girls remain fascinating with time bombs always ticking and the new "villains" are as ever, scary, violent and doomed.
A longer than usual book but remains gripping to the end. Will he write more?
It is so refreshing to see quality and work maintained through a writers career, where so many others get rich, lazy and begin to just turn the handle.
Well done James Lee Burke. Another winner.
