Historically accurate? Well almost but beautifully acted and superb interiors. They aren't afraid to use low level lighting for night scenes so lots of atmospheric shadows and flickering light quite unlike a lot of films and productions where the room appears to be almost daylit. If you have tried the book and been put off please give this a go.

Dickson at his humorous best. This is the first in a series and I think the best of the lot. The others are OK but as the series goes on the situations become increasingly contrived and the tone more earnest until the light heartedness that is such a feature of this story is entirely lost. Buy this and borrow the others

Nicely twisted take on High noon, and just about any other 'lone hero against the odds' western you care to mention. Good for a chuckle.

3.0 out of 5 stars Call for an editor - and a lot of red ink., 29 Dec. 2015

I read the first three - sometimes more out of a sense of curiosity to see what the plot would do next than for any other reason. His insistence on describing memorable meals in detail and including page long chunks of quasi philosophical musing and verbatim homilies made me suspect that the author was being paid by the word rather than for a completed work. The plots are great and the story rattles along well until suddenly you are confronted with a sermon or a bit of detailed legal prose which stops everything in its tracks for a page and a half. At first I tried to read through these because I decided that they must have a good reason for being there, After the fifth or sixth, my ability to suspend disbelief went on strike and I gave up and skimmed over them. This book is less engaging I suppose because it's told in the third person unlike its predecessors. Also I quite agree with the other reviewer that there's a strong sense of pot boiling here. Formulaic battles, a romantic conclusion that seems quite unbelievable - even in the context of the society he is describing - and a scramble to tie up a lot of loose ends in just six pages. Could have been one third the length and twice as exciting. Not sure I'll bother with the next four - or five or six.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful little story to read aloud or to savour yourself, 29 Dec. 2015
Beautifully written and illustrated. I was asked to read this aloud at a social evening by someone who had it read to them as a child and I was enchanted by it. Lovely ending. Be good to yourself and buy this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Passes the time nicely and a few chuckles along the way, 29 Dec. 2015

Some nice touches and really funny moments, but it drags and it lacks the sparkle of Support your local Sheriff. In too many places the cast is going though the motions. The ending has too many loose ends all tied up in one great big cat's cradle at the last minute to be really satisfactory. My problem is that I saw the Sheriff first so I don't know what my overall reaction would have been if I hadn't it to compare with this.

The usual great description and scene setting and a good story although it is very close to 'enchanted pilgrimage' in too many areas to be entirely satisfactory.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Story teller's 'must have'., 29 Dec. 2015

One of a series of collections of tales from the Scottish traveller community told by one of their last great masters of story telling. Some familiar, some strange and some half remembered these stories are the essence of what story telling is about, the glue that binds a culture and community together.

A well written and heartfelt book drawing us into a world long lost. The little steam driven cargo vessels, nick-named 'puffers', were the mainstay of the island and mainland communities of the Scottish west cost and their crews were tough and expert seamen. Now the communities they served have often dwindled into little more than collections of holiday cottages and most of the cargoes go by road. The last of the puffers are relics, crewed and maintained by enthusiasts, and the skills and traditions of their crews are almost forgotten. Those who have read Neil Munro's short stories of Para Handy will find this a compelling read - and if you haven't read them then I suggest you give them a try. If you know the West Coast of Scotland you'll be right at home and if you don't, you'll want to go there.

Great fun. Works well as a series of shorts read over a period and also as a single story - which the ending in fact insists it is. The take on 'Close Encounters' is a lovely bit of satire on an overwritten bit of the genre.
