4.0 out of 5 stars RUBY BRAFF -ONE OF A KIND., 7 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Ruby Braff was instantly recognisable, his style based on Louis Armstrong of course, and these are early recordings of his from the mid-50's for the shortlived Bethlehem label,,plus a bonus from John Hammond's Vanguard label, the first time on CD.!The Ruby Braff Special!which is actually the cream of the crop, with Vic Dickenson (tmb),also instantly recognisable, and the Basie rhythm section, with Nat Pierce on piano,,Walter Page(bass) and Jo Jones(dms),Freddy Green (gtr) was absent for some reason, great stuff and long tracks, the Bethlehems ,apart from the live session were from 10" LPs and around 3 minutes each track,The Ruby Braff Quartet, with the sparkling piano of johnny Guarneri is excellent, the live !Ball at Bethlehem! recorded on new Years Eve 1954 is perhaps the weakest of the sessions, not bad, but notyhing special,.The Holiday in Braff! has a larger group, saxes and rhythm, with arrangements by Bob Wilbur who takes the solos, note that the last title on CD 1 is actually the second on side 2 and vice versa, mostly tunes made famous by Bilie Holiday,The Quintet session with Bud Freeman, another one like Braff and Vic Dickenson is very good,so, summing up, a bit of a mixed bag,but well worth having, Ruby is consistently good.

4.0 out of 5 stars SATISFYING TENOR STUFF, 17 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Jimmy Forest was in a group of Tenor men that were not the greatest, but very satisfying, I only had one of his CD's previouslym'Sit down and Relax', very pleasant.now had 3 unheard sessions, all satisfying,3,Tenor with Rhythm and 'Soull Street with a bigger band, the last two, 'Most Much' and 'Soul Steet', with an added Bongo player-most effective,As stgated earlier, most satisfying and recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Small band Jazz, 28 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Excellent small band albums from Woody herman's tenor man in the great First Herd o the 40's,thesxde sides are from 1949,1950 and 1952,the Verve Catalogue,,with various fine musicians, including trombonist bill Harris from his First Herd days,te album with the Buddy Rich Trio is much superior to a live session I had, where Buddy overwhelmed Flip.
This is a good buy...

4.0 out of 5 stars Louis and Duke-what a combination!,, 3 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This CD issue is superior to the original LP issues as it made me change my mind about a couple of things, originally I thought that barney bigard on Clarinet sounded too weak behind the powerful Louis and Trummy young on trumpet and Trombone respectively, but here he is exactly right, although not quite at his best.Louis and Duke are magnificent and this is probably Danny barcelona's best session, to me he was the weakest of all the All Stars drummers.
All in all, a very worthwhile issue and the extras are interesting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gerry Mulligan- original sextet, 13 Oct. 2012

Excellent music, but produced in higgledy-piggeldy order,no effort has been made to produce the recordings in any order and to read the running order is difficult as it is red on black in the booklet, otherwise it would have rated 4 stars..

5.0 out of 5 stars Gerry Mulligan CJB at Santa Monica., 13 Oct. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This 2CD collection is superb, consisting of over 2 1/2 hours of great music by this comparatively short lived aggregation and 13 previously unheard titles,I would go so far as to say, this is probably the best of the Concert Jazz band CD's,although the best "Blueport", featuring Clark terry is on another CD,
