5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Bogart and Bacall Collection, 2 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Excellent Bogart and Bacall Collection. All four films are classics and showcase the actors' versatility. It is often noirish, full of suspense and cool characters. It really is late 40s - mid 50s drama / thrillers at their best. Also, very good sound and picture quality plus subtibles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect holiday atmosphere, 2 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent set of lovely holiday films. Good picture quality and sound, plus subtitles.

"It Happened on Fifth Avenue" is a charming film about a homeless man who lives in a fancy mansion in NYC while the owner is away. Various other people with housing problems arrive as well, as do the owner's family (incognito). It is very sweet and full of human warmth.

"The Shop Around the Corner" is unusual in that it is set in pre-war Budapest and has a very authentic (to me) old European vibe in the way people live and talk. Reminiscent of Ninotschka in the way it depicts Lubitsch's old country. This is a slow film and it takes a while to get into the pace but once you do, it is well worth it.

"Christmas in Connecticut" stars Barbara Stanwyck as a career woman who has to pretend to know how to be a house wife. Charming, with added bonus of Sydney Greenstreet and S.Z. Sakall (both from "Casablanca") in a supporting roles.

Have not seen "A Christmas Carol" yet but wanted to post a review as the strength of the aforementioned 3 movies more than warrant a strong buy recommendation.

I Was An Adventuress [DVD] [1940]

5.0 out of 5 stars Watch it for top-noth Peter Lorre and Erich v Stroheim, 2 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Peter Lorre and Erich von Stroheim (!) star as con artists in this unusual and fun comedy. They look lugubrious (both), baleful (Peter Lorre) and reminds you of campy James Bond baddies (Erich von Stroheim) as they work their way through this very entertaining and somewhat unusual film. In short, they are excellent. Vera Zorina co-stars as their accomplice, who (conveniently as VZ was a real dancer) also performs in a couple of lovely dance sequences (choreographed by Balanchine) that have little to do with the rest of the film but are beautiful.

Tcm Greatest Classic: Legends - Lauren Bacall [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]

5.0 out of 5 stars Diverse collection showcasing the talent of Lauren Bacall, 15 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A collection of 4 Lauren Bacall movies: ranging from drama to comedy, good print quality and with subtitles. Key Largo and Dark Passage are both classical Bogart and Bacall vehicles which bear re-watching over and over again. Blood Alley with John Wayne is, in my eyes, by far the weakest of these films and frankly not thatt interesting. No matter, the collection is rounded off with Designing Women, a 1950's light and likable romcom with Bacall and Gregory Peck, a surprisingly pleasant film. All in all, I highly recommend this collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Bogart collection, 15 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent collection of 4 Bogart Movies for a very reasonable price. The quality of the print is good and all films are subtitled. They showcase his versatility as an actor and genuine likability (even in roles that are less than likable). The standout for me was the Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse (which I had never heard of) where Bogart plays a hardbitten gangster against Edward G. Robinson's inquiring doctor who infiltrates a gang of robbers in order to assess the body's physiological response to crime. Sounds odd, but it is an unusual and very good film. It alone (or for that matter any of the films here) is worth the price of the disk.

Solid Gold Cadillac [DVD] [1956] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Dvd ~ Judy Holliday

Price: £23.95

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and charming movie with Judy Holliday, 27 Jan. 2015
This film was included in the "Silver Screen Romances - 8 Movies" collection so I have no views on what the print quality etc is of this stand-alone dvd. However, given the dearth of reviews for this movie, I wanted to add my 2 cents and say that this is a lovely movie. It stars the effervescent Judy Holliday in a charming and genuinely fun comedy. JH is great in her typical role as the intelligent and innocent person who says out loud what others merely think - in this case that the company where she is a small shareholder is badly run by the new management. It sounds dull, but it is not. This is a light-hearted and smart comedy. I also really liked that her love interest is a normal-looking man and not a typical suave charmer.

I recommend this film strongly if you like Judy Holliday and if you are looking for a charming comedy from the 1950s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and charming Errol Flynn and Eleanor Parker film, 5 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had no idea Errol Flynn had such comedy chops as what he displays in this 1946 film. He and Eleanor Parker are a divorced couple, although clearly still madly in love with each other. He is a well-off (I guess based on the life he leads) commercial painter and she is back with her domineering mother (played by the excellent Lucile Watson) living in a swanky Park Avenue mansion. The setting is NYC around Christmas time and it is as atmospheric as one can imagine. There is also a cute child (theirs, trying to bring her parents back together), a neighbourhood restaurant run by the lovely old-Europe waiter from Casablanca and excellent banter all around. Errol Flynn and Eleanor Parker have great chemistry, and both are very good comedy actors. Special props to Errol Flynn for spoofing his public action man persona.

If you are looking for a charming and entertaining comedy from the 1940s, I'd highly recommend this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful British comedy in the Ealing spirit, 6 July 2014

This review is from: Law and Disorder [DVD] (DVD)
Genuinely enjoyable comedy with Robert Morley and Michael Redgrave. The script is tight and fast-paced, the actors are uniformly excellent and the overall result is a gentle and very funny comedy. I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you enjoy British comedies from the 1940s and 50s, you will probably like this one a lot.

Dream Wife [DVD] [1953] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Dvd ~ Cary Grant

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable rom-com with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, 24 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Cary Grant is frustrated with high-powered fiancee Deborah Kerr who works at the US State Department and is very focussed on her job. During a business trip to fictitious oil exporting Bukistan, he meets a beautiful and submissive princesse, brought up in a patriarchal society. Marriage to such a woman suddenly seems very attractive. Complications ensue when relations between the US and Bukistan necessitates top level involvement from both sides.

It sounds absurd, but is genuinely funny. For sure a good script to begin with, but what elevates this movie are the two comedic stars Cary Grant and (surprisingly to me at least) Deborah Kerr. They have excellent chemistry and wonderful timing. See it for some light-hearted and sweet romance & comedy. The only downside is that the sound is in some places a bit iffy, but it does not detract from the film,

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of "daring" 1930s rom-coms and dramas, 9 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
By today's standards, what happens on screen here is not daring in the least, but by the post-code standards in the 1930s (and probably all the way up until the 70s) this is heady stuff: people get divorced without then being hit by fire and brimstone; a woman is not only a high-powered executive, but also has a male secretary with whom she exchanges seductive glances; a man effectively picks up a young woman in church, people are scantily clad and women do cartwheels in their knickers.

All in all, this collection is great. It contains 4 films: Jewel Robbery (William Powell is a very attractive robber, Kay Francis his only too willing victim), Lawyer Man (William Powell is a scrappy lawyer making it big alongside faithful assistant Joan Blondell), Man Wanted (Kay Francis as the executive who employs an attractive male secretary) and They Call it Sin (Loretta Young as a small-town pianist who comes to NYC).

I really enjoyed all of these films, which can be classified as romantic comedies and dramas. Excellent actors, and refreshing to experience the "daring" attitudes not found in your typical 1930s-40s film where one can guess how things will end up by simply using the rather restrictive moral code of the time.

There are no subtitles, which doesn't matter since the sound is very good. Go buy it and marvel at acting skills and story lines in these films, all made in 1932.
