Law and Disorder [DVD]
Law and Disorder [DVD]
Dvd ~ Michael Redgrave
Price: £8.97

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful British comedy in the Ealing spirit, 6 July 2014

This review is from: Law and Disorder [DVD] (DVD)
Genuinely enjoyable comedy with Robert Morley and Michael Redgrave. The script is tight and fast-paced, the actors are uniformly excellent and the overall result is a gentle and very funny comedy. I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you enjoy British comedies from the 1940s and 50s, you will probably like this one a lot.

Dream Wife [DVD] [1953] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Dvd ~ Cary Grant

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable rom-com with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, 24 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Cary Grant is frustrated with high-powered fiancee Deborah Kerr who works at the US State Department and is very focussed on her job. During a business trip to fictitious oil exporting Bukistan, he meets a beautiful and submissive princesse, brought up in a patriarchal society. Marriage to such a woman suddenly seems very attractive. Complications ensue when relations between the US and Bukistan necessitates top level involvement from both sides.

It sounds absurd, but is genuinely funny. For sure a good script to begin with, but what elevates this movie are the two comedic stars Cary Grant and (surprisingly to me at least) Deborah Kerr. They have excellent chemistry and wonderful timing. See it for some light-hearted and sweet romance & comedy. The only downside is that the sound is in some places a bit iffy, but it does not detract from the film,

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of "daring" 1930s rom-coms and dramas, 9 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
By today's standards, what happens on screen here is not daring in the least, but by the post-code standards in the 1930s (and probably all the way up until the 70s) this is heady stuff: people get divorced without then being hit by fire and brimstone; a woman is not only a high-powered executive, but also has a male secretary with whom she exchanges seductive glances; a man effectively picks up a young woman in church, people are scantily clad and women do cartwheels in their knickers.

All in all, this collection is great. It contains 4 films: Jewel Robbery (William Powell is a very attractive robber, Kay Francis his only too willing victim), Lawyer Man (William Powell is a scrappy lawyer making it big alongside faithful assistant Joan Blondell), Man Wanted (Kay Francis as the executive who employs an attractive male secretary) and They Call it Sin (Loretta Young as a small-town pianist who comes to NYC).

I really enjoyed all of these films, which can be classified as romantic comedies and dramas. Excellent actors, and refreshing to experience the "daring" attitudes not found in your typical 1930s-40s film where one can guess how things will end up by simply using the rather restrictive moral code of the time.

There are no subtitles, which doesn't matter since the sound is very good. Go buy it and marvel at acting skills and story lines in these films, all made in 1932.

Count of Monte Cristo [DVD] [1934] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Count of Monte Cristo [DVD] [1934] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Dvd ~ Robert Donat

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent old adventure film, 22 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Faithful re-telling of the well-paced and thrilling plot of Dumas' novel. Robert Donat is very good as unfairly convicted Edmond Dantes who after a long stretch in prison emerges to exact his revenge in 1830s France. I had never seen (or unfortunately even heard of) Robert Donat before which is clearly my loss when it comes to swashbuckling and noble adventure actors.

The print sometimes makes this seem almost like a film of the silent era, mainly due to the color contrasts and people's very pale faces. But this does not matter: the actors neither move, speak or (over)act like they do in those films. The sound is also very good, so much so that the subtitles are not needed.

Overall, this is a thrilling and stirring adventure film. Five stars easily (which would be 5+ if they would re-master this film as they have done with the wonderful "Robin Hood" with Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland).

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre 1943 thriller, watch it for Greenstreet and Lorre though, 11 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
WWII spy thriller set in Ankara. An American gets handed an envelope by a distressed lady on a train. Turns out the envelope is wanted by the Germans, the Russians and probably some other countries' spy agencies as well.

The plot is a bit confusing and there are many better thrillers from the 1940s, but this film is fairly entertaining. The two big pluses are Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet, playing their usual roles but as always very professionally. The lead is George Raft, whom I had never heard of before and who lacks the charisma of, say, Humphrey Bogart.

No great shakes, but as a matinee type movie (and period piece, love those 1940s clothes and street scenes!) it is OK.

Baroness & The Butler [DVD] [1938] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Dvd ~ William Powell

4.0 out of 5 stars Watch it for William Powell, 11 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am a committed member of the William Powell Appreciation Society and would happily watch him in pretty much anything. Here he plays the butler of the Hungarian prime minister, who is an elderly aristocrat living with his family in a splendid castle. The butler excels in his profession and comes from a long line of butlers who have all served the same family. Then the butler runs for parliament, is elected and various mayhem ensues.

William Powell is, as always, magnificent. Not only is he a good actor, he also manages to convey a large dose of likability. The story is entertaining, but - for me at least - somewhat marred by the antiquated attitudes with respect to servants and masters. When watching old movies, one has to accept the different worldviews held then (e.g., with respect to women) and normally I have no problem with it. Here it was a bit much, even though I realize it is part of the story.

Anyhow, the print is good as is the sound. No subtitles, unfortunately, but that is OK. The only one who is difficult to understand is the prime minister's daughter as that actress has a very heavy French accent.

Overall, the minor characters are good, and William Powell shines in this very old romantic comedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent romantic comedy with Myrna Loy and Melvyn Douglas, 5 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Myrna Loy plays an accomplished editor with a high-powered job at magazine in 1940s New York. In order to stave off unwanted male attention, she pretends to be married. Complications ensue when she meets Melvyn Douglas and falls in love with him.

This is an excellent romantic comedy: charming, interesting story and great chemistry between the two leads (who are both very good). I find some old movies too frantic with people talking much faster than you normally do, running around hysterically (e.g., screwball comedies at their worst). This is - thankfully - not one of these movies: even though there are no subtitles, you can actually hear what everyone says. It is a genuinely amusing romantic comedy with two very likable lead actors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced, entertaining and smart comedy, 21 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This film quite surprised me in that I had not expected it to be as good as it is. Errol Flynn shines in a comedic role, alongside lovely and funny Olivia de Havilland and Rosalind Russell. Excellent chemistry all around. The story is fast-paced (my only quibble with this film is that they sometimes speak very quickly and there are no sub-titles, but this is a minor issue), intelligent and amusing. All characters are geniunely likable and the twists and turns will keep you on your toes. I cannot recommend this highly enough: buy it for 90 minutes of witty and glamorous fun.
