4.0 out of 5 stars Not built for speed, 5 Mar. 2014

Many microwave users will have become used to FAST cooking ... doing things like 4 Large Baked Spuds - Open door, insert spuds, close door , turn one knob, hit go, 6 minutes in microwave - then transfer for 3 minutes in preheated worktop oven or grill to harden skins. From raw to table, 10 minutes tops. Similar but even faster for reheating stuff from fridge on one plate while the TV adverts are running - 4 minutes and you are eating

If you still need to work at this pace then this machine is not for you.

The machine is extremely cumbersome in the number and variety of button presses required - often dozens of hits - and then it takes FOR EVER to do the job, and you are not at all sure that it is actually doing it. Its TOTAL power is 700 watts, rather than the more usual 800 to 1100 watts of most microwaves, and if you invoke the Grill or Crisper functions, microwave is 500 watts tops. You are not saving energy because everything just takes longer.

BUT - if you can adapt to the tripling of cooking time - it is extremely useful, in that it slowly microwaves and browns in one operation .... and by doing it slowly tends to drive out the oil or fat content onto the hotplate, where it can be wiped away with a paper towel. Oven Chips with 5% Sunflower Oil end up being quite chip shop like taste, but now with only 4% oil content. Previously fried or roasted vegetables like parsnip, potato, carrots can be reheated and half the oil driven out. Lean bacon, pork medallions, sweats out fat content to around 6%. Pastry, Fish Pie and Shepherd's Pie can now be had without soggy tops.

For those who are trying to cut fats and calories from their diets, but still demand food that tastes of food, this is a major tool to help in that objective - if used alongside a worktop mini oven and a slow cooker there is nothing you cannot cook, given time..

3.0 out of 5 stars Print too small, 25 Feb. 2014

Cross referencing leaves a lot to be desired. More of a quick reminder lookup for someone already very familiar with medicine.

Formula writing (Erin is a group) ... but if you are into animals then more of the same is O.K.

I had a Van Nostrand in my teens - at least half of science homework was helped by a quick lookup. This book is essential for any family serious about education.

ABC of Heart Failure (ABC Series)
ABC of Heart Failure (ABC Series)
by Christopher R. Gibbs
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Well explained, 25 Feb. 2014

Reasonably jargon free explanation of the deep levels of HF - but not so much about the early stages, or test results, or differential diagnoses with similar symptoms.

Reversing Memory Loss: Proven Methods for Regaining, Strengthening, and Preserving Your Memory
Reversing Memory Loss: Proven Methods for Regaining, Strengthening, and Preserving Your Memory
by Vernon H. Mark
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.96

1.0 out of 5 stars Not what it says in the title., 25 Feb. 2014

The book rattles on about what it promises, over and over and over - but never delivers. In the end the only advice given about improving memory is to go somewhere else and find a book about improving memory ! (Like the Tony Buzan series of forty odd years ago)

3.0 out of 5 stars Slow going, 25 Feb. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
A brilliant book is consumed in a day or two. This has been around for three months and I haven't got past Chapter Two. The subject is interesting but many characters are easily forgettable so you have to keep backtracking.

To be useful, such a book would need to have an adequate cross reference between symptoms, diseases and diagnoses. This book has hundreds of pages of describing the essentials of each illness, what to do, prognosis, tests - but only a very poor index. It is also in a tiny faint font that requires very strong full daylight to read. In a normally lit room in Winter I needed to use a close up torch.

If you are looking for clarity - it is abundant here. Lucid explanations are given about all sorts of CFS problems, in the sort of English language that people use,and medics don't,
