A stunning introduction to this marvelous city or an amazing wealth of knowledge for regular visitors, this four part series presented by a knowledgeable Venitian is wonderfully shot and scored. It perfectly gives a snapshot of the history of Venice and the Lagoon around it, some might balk at the final episode which points a finger at the tourists that have turned the city into a giant museum, but this is the quandary the city finds itself in as it tries to survive with no way of growth or any real industry. Well worth investing in.

This review is from: The Signalman [1976] [DVD] (DVD)
As with A Warning to the Curious, this was part of the BBC's ghost story for christmas series and it doesn't disappoint, these short films feel like tales for cold nights outside while a warm fire roars inside. The simple setup and masterful performance by Denholm Elliot really sell the subtle chills and even if the finale doesn't deliver it's well worth a ride. The extras are not that special but it's worth the price just for the film itself, a great example of quality storytelling with unobtrusive direction by Lawrence Gordon Clark. Now, if only the bfi would release The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrifying!!, 19 Jun. 2007
I remember catching this on BBC-2 many years ago, it was one of my first horror film experiences, it scared me witless!! Finally plucked up the courage to pick up the dvd, and it is still fine viewing, the performances are subtle, the photography wonderful, you can almost feel the cold winds rushing in off the sea as Peter Vaughan searches for the lost crown. The picture quality is no great shakes( it's a thirty plus year old tv film!) and the extras are limited to a brief biog and a audio reading of M R James's classic story, but i urge you to check this out now, it's how ghost stories should be told!
