A perfect pop song. Super retro feel (Curtis Mayfield would have been proud), great beat, great tune.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tragic, fascinating, 31 Aug 2014
This review is from: Last Concert in Japan (Audio CD)
I agree with everyone here who gives this a good slating, but I love it because there's a fabulous, if tragic, narrative behind it:
* Bolin, brilliant square peg in a round hole, struggling with heroin, is nevertheless the only one with creative energy in a band that is on its last legs.
* The rest of the band, particularly Lord, trying in vain to carry Bolin, who can barely stand, but they know they're failing; a rock band lives and dies on its lead guitarist, and they know they're dying. Thus Lord is playing the opening riff to "Burn", all on his own.
* Yet when Bolin wakes up, as in "Wild Dogs", and the solo to "Burn", he's electrifying. The tragedy of what might have been.

I've heard Lord saying how he hates it. It must have been a terrible time for him. On pure musical terms, it's awful. But the drama, the death throes (literal and figurative) of a huge and great band, are compelling. On a par with Nirvana's unplugged farewell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unknown Hero finally sees the sun, 26 Jun 2014

Fabulous story (see DVD), the most humble person I've ever come across. But does the music pass the test in isolation? You bet; it's bloody brilliant; Jose Feliciano meets Bob Dylan.

Brilliant stuff, start to finish. Superb songs. I always thought Stills a v underrated songwriter, and wonderfully sensitive guitar player. Cameos by Hendrix and Clapton the icing on the cake.

Great size for a tennis day bag. I'll tell you in a year whether it was well enough made to last.

Hard to beat the energy of Jerry Lee, here toned down enough for him to play his piano properly, which is always welcome

1.0 out of 5 stars What the 80s did to some great musicians, 26 Jun 2014
This review is from: Empire Burlesque (Audio CD)
Perhaps Bob listened to Neil Young's "Landing on Water" and thought, hey, I could make a record this bad.

It seems synthesizers completely foxed several guitar based artists of the 60s and 70s; how could they react to them, incorporate them into their sounds? In hindsight, the answer was to simply let them pass. That wasn't obvious at the time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fairly Straight Stuff, 18 Jun 2014
A fairly straight film of a concert. Was rather expecting some interesting visual, musical or narrative twists. Aside of that Young is immense.

1.0 out of 5 stars Falls apart, 8 Jan 2014
Bought a black 16Gb of these, kept it in my rucksack with a much older memory stick, and found that the plastic casing was weak, and needed sellotape assistance within months, while the older stick has withstood many more years of the same (mild, I think) treatment. Also the USB port protector does not prevent dirt getting in.
