The Modern Fantastic: The Films of David Cronenberg

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for Cronenberg lovers!, 20 Jan. 2006
This is an excellent collection of essays about one of the greatest directors, David Cronenberg. I had the privilege to be taught by Michael Grant last year at kent University as an Undergraduate film student, and he certainly knows what he is talking about when it comes to Cronenberg. While Cronenberg is known for his controversial 'body horror', these essays examine his obsessive interest in the mutated or diseased body, sexual pathology, and radical scientific experimentation.I highly reccomend this book to anyone facinated with horror, or cinema.

5.0 out of 5 stars moving and intriging, 11 Nov. 2005
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Love Liza [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
Love Liza is a powerful film. It centres around the suicide of Philip Seymour Hoffman's wife and how he copes without her. She leaves him a note but, unable to open it, he carries it around with him and stares at it in a mixed daze of grief and extreme anger, not wanting to understand why his wife killed herself. The performances in this film are amazing, and Hoffman relies on his physical presence to convey extremely difficult emotions. There isn't much dialogue, yet the film pulls this off brilliantly.A highly recommended film that makes your heart ache and your brain think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind-blowing!, 27 April 2005
Six feet Under has to be one of the most original TV series ever made. And the second series could possibly be said to be even better than the first ( if it is possible!). I can not recommend it highly enough and if there were more stars to rate this, it would get 100!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wistful, romantic and soothing, 14 April 2005
This review is from: Talkie Walkie (Audio CD)
This is the first Air album I bought after hearing them on The Virgin Suicides soundtrack and it is amazing! They mix slow, mystical music with powerful lyrics of love, space and cosmic motion that is great to just chill out and listen to. Sitting around daydreaming or while I'm doing drawing its just such a great album to put on anytime. My favourite song has to be Cherry Blossom Girl which is heart-achingly goregous!

5.0 out of 5 stars lyrical and brilliantly told, an excellent memoir, 2 April 2005
This review is from: Skin Game: A Memoir (Paperback)
From the moment you being Skin game, Caroline's writing comsumes you and envites you to read on. The way she describes her life through her angst and sadness is so compelling, that I felt at once that she was putting onto the page things I had kept to myself. I also used to self-harm, and the way Caroline describes the addiction to cutting out her pain made sense to me. This book is not only an excellent book for others who self harm, but also anyone who is close to a self-harmer and wants a deeper understanding of what is like. Written beautifully i would recommend it anyone who loves reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars a moving, wonderful novel, 29 July 2004
I was so moved my Maya's struggle and horror that she saw I found myself in tears at more than one point while reading this novel. Her style of writing and language are so beautiful, and the pain she describes are so vivid and moving I would reccommend this to anyone. I've started the next volume in her autobiography and also her poetry, which are both powerful, thought provoking and poignant.

1.0 out of 5 stars Please do everyone a favour and leave the plant!, 22 May 2004
This review is from: Being Jordan (Hardcover)
I have to say that many biographies can be very interesting. Even people without any particular talents and have just been lucky in terms of becoming a product in themselves like Geri Halliwell or Britany Spears. But really, this trend for the over exposed, over sexed and over paid pieces of trash we see everyday in newspapers is just for money - You really think Jordan- sorry, Katie Price wrote this??? It's all just rubbish that is best left unread, I mean hasn't everyone had enough of her?? Shes everywhere, and what does she really have to offer apart from really classy pictures. Isn't this book a chance for her to start her singing career?!?! Good luck with that Jordan!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars haunting + beautiful, ths film conveys the essence of cinema, 9 April 2004
This a beautifully crafted film that tells the story of a Jewish young girl (Christina Ricci) who is sent to England when she is six and adopted by an English family who re-name her suzie. As soon as Suzie is old enough she moves to Paris to make a new life for herself, and hopefully get to America where she can try to find her long lost father. She joins an opera company where she meets Cate Blanchette, and who quickly become friends, and soon falls in love with a Gypsy (Johnny Depp). But her happiness is destroyed when she must decided what she wants when the Nazi invasion begins.
This film is an interesting look into ideas surrounding identity and nationality, and is fused together with rich and vivid images. The costumes are stunning and the setting of Paris against the backdrop of WWII is brilliant. It captures a certain haunting essense, and has some great performances from all the leading roles.

5.0 out of 5 stars spontaneous, vibrant ,and groundbreakingly original!, 30 Mar. 2004
The French director Jean-Luc Godard pays tribute to American musicals, love, youth and his love of film in Une femme est une feme, in much the same way that his debut feature,BREATHLESS,did with American gangster films. The story follows the beautiful Angela (Anna Karina), a stripper who wants nothing more than to have a baby. Her live-in boyfriend, Emile (Jean-Claude Brialy), doesn't want to refuse and risk sparking major friction between the two. However, fed up with her constant pleading, Emile finally suggests that she shack up with his best friend, Alfred (Jean-Paul Belmondo), and much to Emile's dismay, she eventually takes his advice. A WOMAN IS A WOMAN is Godard at his most affectionate and good-natured. He also makes several cinematic in-jokes, and features a magnetically beautiful performance from Karina, who soon after the film became Godard's wife. This really is worth seeing!
