5.0 out of 5 stars Far from the mad-en-ing crowds...., 13 April 2013
It's about this time of year (April) when I have had more than enough of winter that my thoughts turn to where I can find some warm, early, summer sunshine. Dvd's like Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Shirley Valentine and Mama Mia fuel that desire and provide a temporary `fix'. Filled with images of luscious scenery, turquoise seas and white sandy beaches, I crave my on own little corner of paradise, if only for a week or two? What I don't want is the thronged, loud, boozed up, sex-on-the-beach variety but then Mike & Donna's guide is not for those folks who will inevitably book the cheapest package to some purpose built pit they don't even know much less care about.

This guide is for the discerning traveler who wants to the insider track on Corfu, its people history, customs, food and drink and most importantly those extra special, unspoiled places that thankfully still exist on the island according to Mike & Donna who list them geographically with a short synopsis, where you can go to avoid all of the above. Nicely written with more enticing photographs, the authors weave in amusing anecdotes from Homers Odyssey and the brothers Durrell as well as useful information on everything from what to do if you get spiked by a sea urchin to what to eat in `honest' Taverna's and even how to drink Ouzo?

Perhaps, if you are a seasoned traveler to the Greek Islands you already know all there is to know about Greeces' signature blue and white churches, the olive trees, those stone presses you see lying around and the best day to gather wild herbs like Oregano (St John's Day the 24th June) by the way, I am and I didn't. So, if like me you would prefer your holiday in Corfu to be a proper and thoroughly enjoyable travel experience, then this is the guide for you.

I love this book, it is like a big box of chocolates you can dip into time and time again (without the calories!) Or an extravagant bouquet of flowers that will never wither and die, just like Louise's wisdom, timeless, precious and comforting...

This book is excellent, 85 years of Louise Hays life lessons and wisdom, condensed into one beautifully crafted and articulated volume by Cheryl Richardson, who asked precisely the questions we have all wanted to the know the answers to? Louise, kind, gentle and gracious as ever answered them all. Whatever you are struggling with you will find the solution in this book. Its fresh, its powerful and one you will never be sorry you bought....

5.0 out of 5 stars At last....?, 6 Nov 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A simple system that works! I have been using Mark's short bursts trick for years to get all my housework (a job I used to loathe) done in an hour with the aid of an egg timer. Which is all you will ever need plus maybe a pen and paper. The concept of a closed list is the best yet and completely new to me, a veteran list maker, but this the way I will be working from now on while dealing with any backlog (has everybody the same problem with emails and photos) which he banishes in one fell swoop, in timed batches. As chief cook and bottlewasher of a household and small business, this kind of smart is exactly what I need. The book is chock full of excellent business tips as well and I would have no problem recommending it to anyone.Susan Byron

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Excellent, 6 Nov 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
You know the way most of these types of books are all waffle (with $5 words) that you have to wade right through to the end before you find even one interesting nugget of information, if you are lucky? Well, Martha's hilarious book gets straight to the point starting at the end, rather than the begining, which is her whole point. Perhaps it was just perfect timing for me, like a previous reviewer but I cant recommend it highly enough. Its pure gold dust, or should I say star dust, wise and wonderful and probably one of the best books I have ever read. Susan Byron, Ireland

5.0 out of 5 stars It can be done !, 30 May 2007

This review is from: A Chateau of One's Own (Paperback)
Wonderful book and charming tale of a couple who realised their dream of owning a chateau in France and providing an idyllic lifestyle for their children. Sam tells it like it is without bursting the bubble. Romantic and dreamy, yet totally practical. A must read for anyone building castles in the air and proof positive of what can be achieved with guts, determination, passion and love. Congratulations.
