5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome solo album, 9 Dec. 2012
This review is from: Blunderbuss (Audio CD)
If I'm totally honest, I was disappointed the first time I listened to it. On reflection, I think I was expecting it to be like the Stripes or the Raconteurs. Returning to it, I loved every track, and is a truly stunning album. I'd recommend a favourite if I could agree with my own choices! Do yourself a favour, buy it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just beautiful, 10 Mar. 2012
This review is from: Ghost (Audio CD)
I came to Radical Face via the Nikon camera advert, and "Welcome Home" is a standout track, but the album as a whole is fantastic. It seemed an odd choice for an ad campaign for a digital camera, but if it opened his music to a new audience I dont imagine Ben Cooper minds very much! The word "haunting" is probably overused in reviews, but much of this album stays with me, at times haunting, at others sunny, a clever and uplifting concept album. For those who eschew downloads and buy the cd, the packaging is lovely, cardboard sleeve rather than plastic case with a booklet for lyrics.

Anatomy for Fantasy Artists: An Illustrator's Guide to Creating Action Figures and Fantastical Forms
Anatomy for Fantasy Artists: An Illustrator's Guide to Creating Action Figures and Fantastical Forms

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid illustration assistance, 10 Mar. 2012
Glen Fabrey has excellent credentials as a fantasy artist and he doesnt let down here. The book is well illustrated and explained, starting out with some anatomical structure and principles, then moving into case studies of different characters, with a full colour illustration of each character, followed by several drawings of the character in different poses and annotated with explanations around the design of the character. For me, the anatomy isnt as detailed as I would like (Jeno Barcsay's "Anatomy for the Artist" has never been bettered) but anyone wanting an academic study of anatomy would'nt approach this book anyway, and what Fabrey does include is sound and more than sufficient for the budding fantasy artist. The anatomical forms are based on the humanoid, I would have liked some of other, monster creatures such as dragons, but there are probably other titles for that kind of thing. Overall a solid guide for illustrators in this genre.

Giants (Graphic Mythical Creatures)
Giants (Graphic Mythical Creatures)
by Gary Jeffrey
Edition: Paperback
Price: £5.26

3.0 out of 5 stars Comic book in disguise, 10 Mar. 2012
This is a short, but quite well illustrated Graphic Novel of Thor's encounter with the Giants, and the challenges that the Giants set Thor. There are two short pages at the start that briefly set out the mythology of giants across the world, and the rest is a full colour story. A good way of telling the story for young people, but a bit short and not enough depth for me. For the price, though,I couldnt really complain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short but sweet!, 10 Mar. 2012
This review is from: Mythical Creatures (Paperback)
This is quite a small book, and quite short, but really well put together. The illustrations are great, a little caricatured but capture the dramatic essence of fabulous beasts, and full colour throughout. Consider it an introduction to mythical monsters, and should whet the appetite for anyone wanting to learn more about the creatures and the myths themselves. Entries consist of a large dominant image across a double page spread, with short punchy paragraphs explaining the myths around the creature, supported by smaller images and captions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good all-rounder, 10 Mar. 2012
Dont judge a book by its cover! Despite its simple appearance, this is a well compiled resource of mythical creatures and monsters. The illustrations are sourced from paintings, illustrations and photos of sculptures the world over and encompass a wide range of styles, and is full colour throughout. Its easy to read and find what you're looking for.
