The Zanzibar Chest: A Memoir of Love and War
The Zanzibar Chest: A Memoir of Love and War
by Aidan Hartley

5.0 out of 5 stars When Journalism becomes harrowing., 30 Dec. 2011
Perhaps one of the finest documents of a life tied to modern Africa. There is probably a misconception of those who moved to Africa from Europe; colonialism is not a word used nicely. But what of those who moved there, possibly like those from Africa who move to Europe now, with no agenda but to be somewhere where their life is fulfilled and has meaning? Add to this the experience of their descendants who grow up not needing to believe in anything else. Aidan Hartley reaches out to his father and his experiences in Africa, through documents left in his musty Zanzibar chest, to discover more about himself. We then see him entering the ragtag world of a correspondent, and then suddenly there is Rwanda and Somalia. The experience of being at the centre of modern Africa's most harrowing periods is described so vividly by Hartley, it has the power to deeply affect the reader. How he then comes to terms with this is also described. A must for anyone with an interest in making sense of Africa today.

The Lion King: Pride Rock on Broadway
The Lion King: Pride Rock on Broadway
by Julie Taymor
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars How the show started., 30 Dec. 2011
A great document on the beginnings of the stage version of The Lion King. Many photographs of the initial ideas being worked through, original sketches, and ones of the show. Also there is a catalog of photos of the characters and ensemble. Julie Taymor's text is informative and gives a great insight into the creative process of a show this scale. After over a decade of the musical still showing around the world, this volume stands as a reference to the vivid and inventive forms which make up the total design. A must for anyone with a keen interest in the show, and in Julie Taymor's ability and vision to draw on so many forms and skills to create a whole.

Filmed In Supermarionation: A History Of The Future
by Stephen La Riviere
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Behind the scenes of Supermarionation, 30 Dec. 2011
A lively insight into the personalities and the companies formed to create the Supermarionation classics. Interesting photos from those involved, and how some famous careers started. Anyone interested in film making, puppetry, models, and non cgi special effects, will find this a great book. In several areas of film making these guys were the first, and this is well described in the book.Filmed In Supermarionation: A History Of The Future

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Supermarionation companion., 30 Dec. 2011
Anyone wishing to rediscover the Supermarionation classics will find this a great treat. It is also a superb reference for all the episodes made. In an age of CGI it is now amazing to see how the special effects and puppetry were developed, and how they still stand the test of time. Photographs are mainly black and white, but still good. Previously this was published as three separate volumes. Supermarionation Classics

5.0 out of 5 stars Buble at his best, 30 Dec. 2011
This review is from: Christmas (Audio CD)
Michael Buble becomes more polished with each cd. Retro carols are given a sharp but authentic revamp, which makes the originals wither in comparison. Some great duets and backing, and Michael's turn of phrase makes your legs go weak. The Christmas period is too short for a cd like this.Christmas
