I would have real problems finding compatible bags for my old Vacuum Cleaner on the High Street. Amazon is an invaluable resource for such things.

One of my great interests is the History of the Second World War. In my youth I was interested in the chronicle of battles, in more mature years I am more interested in the how and why behind the victories and defeats and this book is a must for that deeper, more mature interest.

This is a spare I have bought; the original is still working fine. Very robust and incredibly good value compared with what I would have had to pay for a similar production on the High Street.

The Fall of the Roman Empire
The Fall of the Roman Empire

5.0 out of 5 stars I have become a Peter Heather Fan, 17 Oct 2013

One of my favourite periods in history because of all the questions it throws up is the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire and the succession of the Dark Ages. I am coming to the conclusion that Peter Heather's writing, which I have only just come across through a recent review in the Sunday Times, is amongst the best. He looks at a variety of economic, sociological, political and diplomatic reasons for the Fall - which indeed is the only way to examine it. A mere chronicle tells you nothing nor does a single-cause theory, most famously espoused by Edward Gibbon who argued that it was Christianity whodunnit! Pathologists find that a lot of human beings die of multiple causes; so, it seems, do Empires.

I am only halfway through the book but already have reached the point where Heather treats how the Romans so badly handled the problem of hordes of Goths turning up on the Northern Frontier that it was a major cause of the decline in what previously had been a viable Empire

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Clash of Empires', 4 Oct 2013

One of my favourite periods about which to read is the fall of the Roman Empire and the so-called 'Dark Ages' which followed. At times the period seems remote, but despite the intervening distances, which brought about such radical developments in technology and culture, human nature hasn't changed that much and, though some of them were hidden from the ancients, economic, political and psychological laws operated then just as inexorably as they do now.

Ancient Rome fell partly because the elites stopped supporting it and, apart from the Church, left the lower classes, including what composed the military rank and file, to fend as best they could with diminishing state and social support. Sounds familiar?
I am but halfway this latest work of Peter Heather but already I want to read his previous work on the Fall of the Roman Empire. He has a light and easy style of writing, which is both erudite and a page-turner (though admittedly the occasional lapse into colloquialism or slang can be a bit jarring). A mere chronicle of events, exciting though they are, would not be enough for me. Heather supplies a political, diplomatic and economic hinterland without which no real sense can be made of what followed the Fall. He basically sets out the explain why in the changed conditions of the world hundreds of years Anno Domini the Roman Empire could not be reconstituted. Basically, Rome taught the barbarians how to fight and the residual culture of Rome taught them how to rule so that there could be no longer be one overarching power such as Rome had exercised until perhaps now with the project of the European Union.

The only complaint I have against Peter Heath is that because his writing is so good my plan of reading in history for the next several months is wrecked while I read and consume this and his previous work!

Ave atque vale. ('Hail and Farewell'.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Rio Bravo, 4 Oct 2013

Rio Bravo, along with Eldorado, provide a diptych of late Westerns (I shall explain what I mean by that term, in a minute) at their best from a master director, Howard Hawks, who essayed many film genres and hardly never had a dud that I know about in any of them.

I personally think that Rio Bravo is slightly superior to the Eldorado, particularly because of that superlative supporting actor Walter Brennan. To add to that, Angie Dickinson provides far more than just the perfunctory love interest which is supplied in Eldorado. Though it has to be said that the James Caan is far more assured in his introductory screen role than Ricky Nelson.

What do I mean by 'late Western'. In a late Western, the interplay of character and an articulate, often witty script is just as important as the gunplay. Hawks minted a particular style of naturalistic conversational interplay, at least by the standard of the times, which was all his own.

In short, Rio Bravo is the classical Hollywood film through which to unwind. Sit back and let the stars, director and writers entertain you. They can't make them like that any more.

Had to buy it.

Sublime, divine modern, religious choral music to soothe the weary, disappointed soul.

So much C of E choral music is rather plain but not this!

For the John Willilams' works alone. I never particularly liked his music for Steven Spielberg but his Olympics pieces are as good as any public pieces by that father of twentieth century American music, Aaron Copland.
