5.0 out of 5 stars One of Kate's most personal albums. Grows and Grows on you, 4 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Red Shoes (Audio CD)
To be honest I bought the album on the strength of absolutely loving 'moments of pleasure'. On the first few listens you're taken aback on how erractic the album sounds. Switching from 'poppy' almost teenage songs such as 'rubberband girl' to the irish jig sounding 'the red shoes' on to the seriously sad and heart felt 'you're the one' its almost a head spin. That said it is one of Kate's most personal albums with her precious work being mainly about characters in books or some other groups of or people who have suffered in some way. as she herself admits she finds the lives of others more interesting than her own. However this album was produced at a time when Kate's mother (who happened to be a professional irish dancer) had just died hence 'the red shoes'. She had also split with her long term partner Del Palmer. You're the one is definitely an ode to him. So as you can imagine Kate was going through a time of mixed and difficult emotions and the album reflects this beautifully. She also collaborates heavily with Prince on the album which is a real treat. Listen out for 'why should I love you' his backing vocals are clear. So I would say don't cast it aside or compare to the' hounds of love' which many believe to be her best work give it some time and you will grow to love it

1.0 out of 5 stars maybe not an alternative for those with severe ear problems, 3 July 2014
Having had severe ear infections as a child which included bleeding and matter from the ear I'm well versed on what ear pain is like. however since being around my early twenties I've not suffered too badly only when flying. Having heard about ear planes I was delighted that there was a cure for my pain and purchased these in the air port. as directed I inserted them an hour before landing. Well all I can say is I've never experienced as acute pain as this. not even as a child (when I was hospitalised) I can't quite describe the stabbing pains and agony I went through for approximately 20mins when descending. I almost passed out. Not wanting to put a dampener on all the reviewers who had a good experience, however I would say if you've had a history of severe ear problems these plugs may actually exacerbate the problem, Anyway after surviving the flight there (just) I decided to ditch the plugs and do what some other people suggested on other websites. I simply held my nose and blew through a closed mouth. I did this on and off for much of the flight until my ears popped. a little bit uncomfortable but absolutely did the trick. for the first time ever I had no pain whatsoever. Hey presto! so pleased. Hope this will help anyone who has had the same experience

5.0 out of 5 stars Tell me your story!, 9 Aug. 2012
This review is from: The Gospel of Us [DVD] (DVD)
I can't quite describe the feeling I evoked from this film. all I can say is it has stayed with me since I saw it 2 months ago. As one other reviewer describes its a more visceral experience than an intellectual one. By that I mean that i was completely drawn in from the start, not quite knowing what was going on but charmed and intrigued all the same.Th eteacher (sheen)says 'tell me your story'. How often do people want to know YOUR story? In a world where we're surrounded by people who talk and don't listen this is refreshing. The title speaks for itself referring to the 'gospel of us' the bible is a story, but as humans we all have a story that's often left untold when we die. The music is sensational, the 'scratchy' sound of the violins and the many scriptual vignettes provoked a curiosity in me and drew me in. Whats so fascinating about this film is the realism of the characters, the humanness of them but the surreal way its been edited. Even if you don't quite understand the meaning behind the story it doesn't matter. What's real is the emotions of the characters dark and light. Its a story about good and evil and the struggle to understand life. This is a film that can bring different emotions and reactions depending on your mood and circumstances at the time. The film can take you where you want to go and can be interpreted in any way you choose. All i would say is just watch it with an open mind and heart and you'll get the best from this. I've read some other reviewers who say it satirises the bible and creationism, however if you simply enjoy it for what it is (a film) and don;t try to intellectualise it you may just enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching, Tragic and funny all at once!, 9 Aug. 2012
This review is from: Dirty Filthy Love [DVD] (DVD)
I have to say this is one of the most moving films I've ever seen, but at the same time extremely funny. I've seen most of Michael Sheen's films and I have to say he is in fact a chameleon. He can not only nail every character he plays but also generates pathos like no other actor. The basic plot is that Mark (sheen) is (was) a successful architect with a beautiful wife and a fancy apartment, until the stress starts to wear him down. What we witness is a man who's mental health has started to manifest itself in OCD and terrets. Although at times, painful to watch, its also uplifting as we see him join others with similar issues in the form of a self help group where he can be honest and open up about what's really going on. we also see his friends although supportive, lack understanding of his condition an simply expect him to 'pull himself together'.I don't want to spoil it for you and give away all the details but please please watch this film. It takes you on an emotional roller coaster but its well worth it. You'll come away feeling you've experienced all the emotions a human can have i.e desperation, shame, anger, love and finally acceptance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely believable!, 8 May 2010
This review is from: Sweet Sixteen [DVD] (DVD)
This is an amazing film. Initially its hard to follow the plot as the glaswegian accents are so strong, however as the story unfolds you can't help but get wrapped up in the emotions of the characters. Martin Compston who plays the lead character is absolutely brilliant. Even though he's selling drugs which most people would find immoral and distasteful you can understand why. All the main characters are emotionally troubled and have their own way of dealing with it. The character 'chantelle' being the 'angel' and 'liam' being the strong but sensitive boy. The argument between liam and his sister chantelle really moved me to tears as did the scene where 'pinball' cuts his own face. Wow this is a powerful movie! Didn't even realise it was a ken loache movie until afterwards but now i see why he is so highly revered. Hats of to all the cast and director.. a sheer masterpiece.

Educating Rita (Remastered) [DVD]
Educating Rita (Remastered) [DVD]
Dvd ~ Michael Caine
Price: £2.76

5.0 out of 5 stars a masterpiece!, 26 Mar. 2010
This has got to be my all time favourite movie. Perhaps as i'm guilty of seeing it from a subjective point of view. As a working class woman i can relate to the way 'rita' feels so inadequate and out of her depth in the world of literary scholars. This film is one of those that you can watch time and again and still learn from. i think the basic message behind the film is that whoever we are wherever we come from in terms of class, we're all human. 'Frank' the middle class proffessor is on the surface a cultured man with artistic taste and intelligence. Rita , on the other hand is working class, naive and eager to explore a world she doesn't know. As the plot unfolds, you see how literature, which means so much to Rita, so much so that she is willing to relinquish her lifestyle for, means absolutely nothing to Frank. What the film really displays is that when you get something freely without effort you become cynical and find it a bore. Its also about what you think is good might not be good for you and that you should follow your heart and not what you're peers tell you. Sorry if this review sounds really amateur.. its my favourite film ever and means so much to me, just got blocked whilst writing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars a severely underrated singer, 24 Feb. 2010
This review is from: LIVE AT RONNIE SCOTTS (Audio CD)
I was 18 when i first heard the sweet melodic harmonie's of ruby turner. that was 22 years ago! 'women hold up half the sky' was probably the pivotal album, released in 1986 the album title lends itself from the old chinese proverb that promotes equality between the genders.A few tracks from that album are on this one such as 'i'd rather go blind' originally sung my the great Etta james. She is an absolute delight to listen to.She Puts her heart and soul into every song and literally takes on a journey of moods and emotions. This woman sings from the heart and from experience. Everyone can relate to at least one of her songs. But 'stay with me baby' really exposes how vulnerable and lonely we all can be at times in our lives and how we also can conquer those times when we're feeling we can't go on. The beauty of ruby is that she sings with such soul, that even when singing about a sad event or feeling you feel utterly uplifted and sated. That said there are some great catchy tunes on here. 'If you're ready is a real upbeat ditty that will brighten the darkest of days.A beautiful sound from a beautiful soul.

4.0 out of 5 stars a guilty pleasure!, 18 Feb. 2010
This is a fabulous movie. i don't generally go in for american romcom's but Meryl streeps acting was sensational. She absolutely steals the show with her wry humour. Yes its a bit fantasy world i agree as this is a romcom of the rich living a luxury life, but who cares! The main attraction for me was that its a romcom for grown ups, not young 18 year old heart throbs. this i can relate to as whatever walk of life we come from and no matter how old we are we all have the same hangups and desires. its lighthearted fun. that said there is a hint of a message in the film that what we think we want isn't always what we need and that love is about more than a roll in the hay? Its not in your face humour, agreed but there are a few funny moments especially when meryl streeps character(Jane) keeps referring to alex baldwin(Jake) as 'big boy' and he asks 'is it because i'm fat or is it a term of endearment. A real treat!

4.0 out of 5 stars at last! an unsentimental american movie., 2 Feb. 2010
To be honest.. you have to be patient with this movie.. its pretty unconventional and is like a low budget movie. However you realise half way through that thats the directors intention. he's showing you the reality of life for 'precious'. You have to listen carefully to make out what she's saying through her north american street drawl. Once you get into it though, you really feel what she's feeling. Its everything an american movie is not. No beautiful women,(apart fromthe school teacher ms rain) no romantic soundtrack, just the harsh reality of urban life. The acting is outstanding and believable. This movie will appeal only to the more discerning viewer who like s character based titles. The mother character played by the stand up comedian 'monique' is so raw and real that it will leave you wanting to donate to every child charity in the country. She plays a horific excuse for a mother. Also you get to see lenny kravitz as a nurse and maria carey stripped of fake tan and looking extremely dowdy.. so it s gotta be worth it for that alone. Watch it and weep!

1.0 out of 5 stars absolutely vile!, 2 Feb. 2010
To be honest i can't give a true review of this film as after the first hour i was absolutely repulsed by it. I'm no prude by any stretch of the imagination but this film is more like hard core porn! These images are the ones that stay with you and they are so graphic that any attempt at telling a story are overlooked by the sheer vulgarity of the images. unless you want to watch a film about graphic sex.. and i mean graphic then dont bother!
