I bought this CD mainly because of one track. "A Winter's Tale" is one of my favourite songs to listen to leading up to Christmas and I love watching the music video on youtube with David Essex and the Border Collie in a winter landscape.
I was listening to the other songs yesterday and realized how good they were and why they were so popular back then. This is a very enjoyable CD.

All eighteen chapters refer to objects which were important, in different contexts, to Jane Austen and her family and the society in which they lived. The detailed descriptions of these objects and their connections with Jane Austen are fascinating and well-researched. This is a new and different approach to presenting Jane Austen and her legacy.

Stephen Clarke's description of typical French behaviour is both accurate and affectionate. I really liked the lists of vocabulary and useful expressions included in several chapters. He has really captured the essence of the French way of life and French people.

This is a well-researched work with all the important historical dates and background information included. At the same time, it is a very entertaining and amusing account of Anglo-French relations from 1066 until recent times. Stephen Clarke has succeeded in writing a history book which is a fascinating read because of its humour, style and unique perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Thoughts, 30 Aug. 2013

I really enjoyed the format. All twenty chapters have a question as the title and each chapter explores possible and plausible answers. The questions are very thought -provoking and encourage the reader to want to find out more, especially if he/she is familiar with all Jane Austen's novels. Cross-references are made and detailed information is given in each chapter. It is very clear that the author is an outstanding authority on the life, times and work of Jane Austen. A must-read for Janeites.
