1.0 out of 5 stars Basic, Boring and Unfocused! Avoid!, 20 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I purchased this book as it was recommended for my human rights module. At the end of the module, I can say the book is nothing short of disastrous. The author constantly relies on a copy and paste formula of citing human rights instrument one after the other. Normally its good to rely on primary sources however the author has done this without really any focus, analysis of their own or intertwining how case law concedes with this legislation. Major parts of my human rights module (right to life/prohibition against torture/prohibition against discrimination etc) weren't even approached in this textbook. Furthermore topics like the regional systems that were covered relied on the 'copy and paste formula' which were overtly basic, unfocused and boring.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not very impressive, 13 Dec. 2014

Would expect better quality for £15, it doesn't look as impressive in the image. The colours are more faded, and they could use better materials in the product such as the flap on the front.

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but rather amateurish at times., 17 Mar. 2014
This review is from: Room 237 (Amazon Instant Video)
The film has interesting theories about Kubrick's film The Shining, however many of the theories can be found easily online while some of the theories posed in this documentary are wildly outlandish and ridiculous that it seems implausible and begs the question of why it was even included in the final documentary.

It's just isn't well made to say the least, in fact some of the interviews are particularly bad not just in terms of content but in terms of quality. There is parts where you can hear children crying in an interview or general noise in the background. It's like the filmmakers did a Skype call to interview these people and didn't even bother to interview them again to get rid of the problems. I highly suspect this as most of the footage is not of the people talking but just their audio with other film footage or evidence around their argument.

3.0 out of 5 stars I have not clue why the overall rating is so high!, 16 Mar. 2014
This review is from: Monte Carlo (Amazon Instant Video)
This is another run of the mill teen romance films. If anything I would say it would fare worse than other films in the genre. The film is very predictable and has been done before, it plays on the mistaken identity or doppelganger theme seen in "The Lizzie McGuire Movie" or even the twin-plot seen in "The Parent Trap" for example. The main difference is that those films do it better and are much more entertaining.

This film also has a lot of regurgitated plot-points considering there is three romance stories. The only well-thought out story can be found in Meg's romance story who is also one of the stronger actresses in this film (played by Leighton Meester). Although people are saying or implying its a rom-com it simply is not, there's very little comedy in the film.

OUYA Console (Electronic Games)
OUYA Console (Electronic Games)

2.0 out of 5 stars It's just okay, 26 Jun. 2013
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
First off, I really liked the design of the OUYA. It's small and it has some weight to it and doesn't feel flimsy or easily broken. The controller feels like it is inspired by the xbox 360 controller although not as good, it reminds of those generic third party controllers you can buy for PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360 etc also sometimes I find the buttons stick if you press down too hard.

The main issue with the OUYA in my opinion is that even though its running on a modified skin of the android OS it doesn't support nearly as much games or even general apps as my android phone does (and it was bought last summer, but it still holds it own in playing most if not all the games on the app market even the more graphic intensive games like Dead Trigger, Dead Space, GTA Vice City etc)

That's not to say that there isn't any cool games on OUYA because there is and the retro game emulators are really good but the fact that things like the google play store integration isn't an option out of the box is very limiting, I wouldn't have minded even if it wasn't perfect in its optimisation for the OUYA. That's my problem with the OUYA, it could have so much potential but there is a lot of shortsightedness in approach such as how restricted the android OS is out of the box, its hardware of the tegra 3 is already dated, things like the sandbox option genre simply are buggy and don't work and the UI does lag at times, considering there is no google play store I found that trying to get apk apps from android to work was very difficult and buggy also. The fact it is open source does help but its still a big flaw as most people aren't that tech-savvy to get workarounds for such stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice animation but the story is lacking, 18 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Warning - there will be spoilers!
First off, the animation on this film is brilliant. It's really got moments of sheer awe, the film is a sort of mix of 2.5D/3D backgrounds and 3D character models which looks very unique. However this is also one of the problems with the film, its visuals often outmatch many other elements of the film in particular the storyline and characterisation. I definitely think the characters could have been developed more, Haruka should had more screen time in the real world rather than on oblivion island. Her relationship with her father should have been explored more at the start of the film, it just equates him with working a lot and being too lazy to clean up after himself, drinking Haruka's drink etc This leads on the second point in that the film is rather content to stay within the cliches of a childrens film/tv-series, the film relies on rather underdeveloped trivial issues in the beginning of the film like the characterisation of Haruka's father and the focus of Dio's bullies who are some sort of gang who take prominence in the first half of the film. It's never really explained why the gang are out to get Dio at all except they find Haruka accompanying him as suspicious. Basically the gang don't really need to exist except for some tension chase scenes.

Yes I might be being harsh on this film as it is afterall targeted towards kids but enjoyable for anybody to watch. Some of the plot elements were really interesting, I liked the folklore elements, the second half of the story involving the Baron is stronger and definitely brings in much needed sentiment and tension to the story that feels rather more forced in the first half of the film such as the introduction of Cotton, although the dancing scene with the phonograph is really what the films needed more as its fun to see them acting like real people, like children and its relatable. I really like the issues that are brought into the plot about abandonment, neglect, the loss of a loved one, worthlessness, growing up and memories of the past, it's a microcosm of what Haruka is feeling as a teenager growing up into an adult and her insecurities. Haruka's motives to get back her mirror and effectively her childhood memories make for an interesting story and there is some good climatic scenes, particularly Cotton's death was an allegory to Haruka's loss of childhood. There is also the metaphor of neglect and loss of Japanese religion and culture seen in the shrine in the real world, Haruka peers inside to realise that it is unkempt and messy, its neglected and forgotten. This is where the film truly shines when it delves into the deeper meaning behind Haruka's adventure however it isn't perfect, it could have been executed a lot better in terms of story, as mentioned before the first half of the story is rather weak. I wouldn't really compare the film Oblivion Island in my personal taste to the likes of Totoro or Spirited Away but its definitely a solid film and I could see why others could consider it a masterpiece on the level of other such films.

Japanese Vocabulary - English/Japanese Flashcards - Animals (FLASHCARD EBOOKS)
Japanese Vocabulary - English/Japanese Flashcards - Animals (FLASHCARD EBOOKS)
Price: £2.10

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Variety , Well-Illustrated!, 29 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have to say the flashcards are very vibrant and well animated which is great for kids (and adults alike) however my only real criticisms are that it misses a few basic animals, mainly the focus on pet animals like a cat or a dog. It also refers to a deer as a "stag" instead in English which is an odd choice in my opinion.

There is a good variety presented from birds, insects, aquatic and land mammals and many are quite cute and child-oriented like the panda, koala, penguin, hamster etc and goes into the more practical such as the insects to include bee, butterfly, ladybird and the snail (the addition of spider would have been a good idea but that's just my opinion and a minor complaint)

Overall I think there is a good variety and it is well-illustrated, I'm looking at the flashcards on kindle android, if you double-click the card it becomes larger which is handy for smaller-sized devices or just low-resolution screens. The author also gave me free access to this work so I have to say thanks in that regard!

2.0 out of 5 stars Really misses a lot of potential., 25 Feb. 2013
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
Really misses a lot of potential.

The graphics are acceptable and on par with the likes of the 360 and PS3, however it's disappointing that Nintendo didn't push it more.

The console is just very unstable and full of glitches in terms of the OS. It's very slow at times certainly not on par with other consoles that are years older. It also wouldn't connect to the internet for whatever reason, when it finally did it took quite a while for the download which is disappointing, I want to play my console not wait for long downloads. Still doesn't support blu-ray, so disappointing.

The new Wii U controller is quite gimmicky and cool, but it doesn't add much to the experience for a majority of games except that the mini maps just appear on the Wii U screen, hardly anything to write home about.

I wish I had of held off buying the Wii U, its over-priced for what is. Maybe if it dropped to around £180 for the premium edition it might be worth recommending as a buy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible!, 11 Oct. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Really awful, first of all it doesn't come in a box like shown in the images. It comes in a small plastic slip with a folded piece of cardboard to show the product. The big issue is that 3 of the 6 screen protectors ripped as I pulled it off the sheet. That's totally unacceptable that half of the screen protectors are unusable. Also there's little protection in delivery considering it's sent in a plain letter, so it could easily get bent in transit. I would avoid all the SWIDO brand screen protectors after this.

Good simple watch but the problem is the strap, its quite short that it barely just fits my wrist. Honestly its suppose to be a man's watch. I would expect them to make the strap longer.
