5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, 20 Jan. 2015

At least as good as any of the other books in this series. The tension builds and builds, and although Hobbs as always gives a wealth of detail and the story develops slowly, there is not a wasted sentence anywhere.
I could not put the book down and now i am desperately waiting for the next book.
I loved the character of bee, a very convincing little girl, and the way that the narrative alternates between two viewpoints gives a fresh impetus to the story and powerfully illustrates how strongly the unfolding of events depends on who is relating the story. It is very cleverly done.
The only shortcoming to the book, I felt, was the two dimensional character of shun, and the unlikely way that she changes from an accomplished, if smug, assassin to silly spoilt snob.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good and appley, 16 May 2013

I use these flavours for teat - instead of buying multplie varieties of tea. They are very intense - as described and you only need a very small drop in a pot to flavour it. the Apple is convincingly apple flavoured, and apple is not easy to find in other flavouring ranges

2.0 out of 5 stars intense but not especially apricot, 16 May 2013

I like these flavourings, but the apricot was not one of my favourites. It's not convincingly Apricot. But It is nice, and not artificial tasting (unlike say some strawberry flavours). I use these flavours in Tea - rather than buying multiple kinds of tea

Actually this is probably quite a good book - if you haven't already read Thinking Fast and Slow. But I had. So this is a popularised summary of the findings explored in much more depth, buy the actual authors of the studies in the other book. So read this if you want an overview of how we actually think and how we fail to think - but if you want the science go back to the original.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, sane advice for troubled parents, 16 May 2013

This is a really good explanation of how children work, of what their task is in growing up, and what yours is in helping them do so. Some really good practical advice together with a clear theoretical framework. I would recommend this to any parent, especially if you are having difficulties.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hooray! More DIscworld - and really good science too!, 16 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I hadn't realised these "Science of" were discworld stories, as well as an explanation of science. I had assumed they were like the "folklore" of which is also a brilliant book - but actually about the folklore of our world which provides the starting point for so much of what in Discworld is real.

So I was delighted to find that this is a story about the wizards, (so I haven't run out after all and there are more of these!) as well as a non-technical (maths free) but very lucid and thoughtful discussion of "roundworld" science - real science that is, contrastred with what happens on discworld - which runs on Narrativium - the power of story.

I would really recomend this to anyone interested in science - and more importantly anyone who thinks they're not interested in science - because everybody must want to know how it all works!

If you're a discworld fan you get a story interleaved with a really good introductory science book and if you're not - you can just skip those chapters but do read the science

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh no my last one!!!, 24 Jan. 2013

Brilliant - I love Pratchett's understanding of people and systems and the way he explains the world through the Discworld.

The witches are fabulous characters and the stories involving them are some of Discworlds best, and this is as good as the others. loosely a parody of phantom of the opera.

I came to Discworld late so have not read them in order - this is the last one left, so now I've read them all and have to wait like all his other fans for the next one to come out - which is leaving me a little bereft.

If you're not yet a discworld fan - do start! It's better to read the books in order - as the development of the characters and their stories is part of the interest -(don't be put off by the Wizard ones which to my mind are the least interesting of the lot - wizards are little boys, whereas the witches are powerful women) though the order is less important with the witches than the Watch I think.

Mostly I borrow my pratchetts from the library - but couldn't find this one so bought the kindle edition. the kindle ones are more expensive than they need to be given you can buy a second hand hard copy delivered for three quid.

Come on Amazon! let's have a complete Discworld on kindle for say £60?
