5.0 out of 5 stars Read all about it! Hack Attack., 2 Aug 2014
I must declare an interest, I am a long-term Guardianista. This books blows the lid off disreputable practices in Fleet Street which, to many, might seem mere entertainment but which, in reality, are a threat to all our private lives and to what is left of our democracy. You read here first, this is the inside scoop on what landed Andy Coulson and several others in jail. It hasn't ended yet. I think I'll be renewing my Guardian subscription.

What can one say? A swiz, a con, a set up... With a pretty picture of a large-breasted lady on the front. Guys, it is a poor photocopy of some ancient Spanish to English dictionary under a fancy name with a big busty bird on the cover. Run as if from the devil and whatever you do, DO NOT click on that dodgy link.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still one of the best..., 12 Oct 2013
Read this years ago under the original title "Conspiracy". Now available on Kindle, hurrah! In my view it is still one of the best books on the Kennedy assassination around because it is well-researched and even-handed in its approach. Unlike many titles in the genre, the author has no pet theory other than that Oswald was not the only gunman in Dallas on that fatal day, which is pretty much accepted by any rational person even remotely in interested in the key event. Summers therefore does a great job of investigating all the angles, the role of shadow government agencies, organised crime and the essential Cuban connections all get a thorough going through as does Oswald's own very interesting life and times.

This is not just a re-edition, there are updates and alterations of the original text made due to new information that has come to light in the last few years. Also contains some interesting graphics and photos which can be enlarged using the Paperwhite's controls.

2.0 out of 5 stars Grand guignol in Yorkshire, 15 Sep 2013
Since I'm a southerner it's probably not my place to say, but, according to this book it's not only grim oop north it's damn well hellish. I like Ellroy and I like dark but about halfway through this novel became puerile and cartoonish, I lost count of the times that diverse characters, or even just the hero, shat or peed themselves with fear and towards the end the plot became extremely incoherent... Yes, it's not for the faint-hearted and distinctly unpleasant. I'm going to read the second one, hoping there's some improvement because various sections were impressively written, the police interrogation for example, if that doesn't deliver, then it's back to Jake Arnott...

5.0 out of 5 stars The biz, 22 Aug 2013
This review is from: Tuf Voyaging (Kindle Edition)
A handful of very interesting novellas set around the character of Haviland Tuf an erstwhile space trader and cat lover turned ecological engineer, who might just be god himself... I particularly enjoyed Martin's descriptive abilities. This is no Game of Thrones, the setting being completely distinct but above all the tone, lightly humorous throughout, is quite different, however, apart from its charm, it does offer some interesting insights into Martin's mind if, like me, you are a thronie...

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, 10 Aug 2013

This review is from: Spanish News Free (App)
As a Spanish speaker in the UK, this is actually rather good, allowing me to access even El País. It gets four stars because the interface is a little clunky at times, for example, I'm from Valencia and there is a list of press you can access per region, Valencia is towards the bottom of the list and seems to fall halfway off the screen which means you can't click on it, but the if you access the papers via the alphabetical name list Las Provincias and Levante are there. Catalan is a given and apart from the regional peninsular languages you can even access some of the papers printed in Spain which are in other European languages (English, German etc.).

5.0 out of 5 stars A writer for our times, 15 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I don't see any English writers writing about the effects of the economic crisis on the man in the street but this is exactly what Martín does in this crime novel. If you like "Breaking Bad", you'll like "Life is Tough" and "el serio", 'nuff said. I should point out that the novel is in Spanish, but Martín is a spare, dry writer so those with a few years of study behind them may be able to get along.

This will not be my last Martín.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most brilliant autobiographies I have ever had the opportunity to read, 23 Feb 2013
Ed Bunker has seen it all, the highs and the lows, he's swum in Randolph Herst's legendary swimming pool in Saint Simeon and been a long-term resident in Folsom and Saint Quintin.

In clear, prescient prose he takes you by the hand and guides you through the passionate journey of his life from a young tearaway to a seasoned con and finally a writer and erstwell movie star. Ed has done it all and seen it all and what strikes you above all else is that he ain't bitter but lucid and faintly amused by the many twists and turns of fate.

I've learnt a lot from this book, but above all that sheer determination can sometimes be rewarded.
