1.0 out of 5 stars Wrongly titled, 31 Oct. 2008
A down-to-basics book this may be. However, it was purchased purely for the Month by Month guide which occupies only pages 119 to 164. The design and format of this information is poor and the author and publisher have no excuse for such a literary piece when superior examples abound. The style could be reminiscent of Isaac Walton. This book is about basic gardening and its poor presentation is reflected by its price. Not worth a buy.

Essential and concise it most certainly is. I found it particularly useful as a quick introduction to the grammar from Spanish.
For the price it's worth it. My only concern is that the book is nearly 30 years old. Languages do change in such a timeframe and there have been some formal revisions in grammar. A new edition with new fonts and clearer layout is needed.

Teach Yourself Portuguese: Coursebook & 2 CDs
Teach Yourself Portuguese: Coursebook & 2 CDs

5.0 out of 5 stars Read all the reviews., 21 Sept. 2007
I found the CD exceptionally disappointing. It does not differentiate pronounciation between the 2 main countries. Dialogues lack intervals of silence to allow attempts to mimic the speakers, nor does this assist a Pause and Restart on a CD player. If transferring the CD to an MP3 player you will have greater inconvenience in this respect. One exercise lacks the full dialogue.
The whole pretext of the book is around the CD, so in a Teach-Yourself context, and having read all the reviews, I consider this book to be over enthused about by other contributors. I am becoming increasingly wary of Amazon reviews.
I rate it TWO stars, but FIVE so that it will appear at the top of the list.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superlative manual for construction, 1 Feb. 2007
A book superbly presented covering every imaginable detail for construction of earthbag houses. Very practically orientated with excellent appendices and references. This book alone should suffice for your construction needs. Emphasis is on construction in dry arid climates, but temperate zones are considered too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and concise, 1 Feb. 2007
Clear descriptive elements for all phases of building. A very good guide for DIY stawbale building. The book concerns construction in northern climes. Whilst it is pertinent to foundation & wall structures, a chapter exploring roof design & construction would have the icing on the cake.
