A great book for the basics, 14 July 2003
As a first time classics student I found this book of great use. It covers topics clearly and includes interesting facts that are often overlooked in lectures. The book covers the period from the battle of Actium right through the reign of Augustus and covers all of the major areas of importance to a historian, namely slavery, women, religion, art, politics and more besides. However the main fault of this book is that it is poorly laid out. The chapter headings are vague and there is no index so you often have to do a lot of reading before you find what you are looking for. I would highly recommend this book to a general reader, or an A-level/first year university student. However beyond the first year of university it is of little value as it is too basic.
