3.0 out of 5 stars (Audio CD) Cartoon vision of industrial dirt and restrained lust, 22 May 2013
"Darkshire" for the urban north? As in real life Manchester ? Hmm Who could take that seriously. And what was up with the old geezer upping sticks from his rural idyll - "reasons of conscience" What ? Sigh. I presume he left the good old c of e to become one of those dissenters - methodists et al - but I just wanted to know more. It seemed one of those lines "suddenly everyone died" ??? Anyway off to the evil north, factories, strikes, irish navvies shipped in as scabs, and our heroine being the complete bitch. And of course people sickening and dying off right left and centre. Not in the same class as pride and prejudice at all.

Trick Of The Dark
Trick Of The Dark
by Val McDermid
Edition: Audio CD

3.0 out of 5 stars (AudioCD) Lesbian erotic tension with psycho serial killers, 21 May 2013
This review is from: Trick Of The Dark (Audio CD)
Not bad. Nicely spoken voice and easy to listen to - this review refers to the 5 cd edition. Lots of wandering back into the past and considering old murders and who could be the guilty person. And lots of lesbian lusting after - almost every female person in the book is a lesbian lusting after someone else. But after about three quarters of the way through it was clear who did what and the end well - not that strong.

Hellstrom's Hive
Hellstrom's Hive
by Frank Herbert
Edition: MP3 CD
Price: £18.89

5.0 out of 5 stars (Audio cd) Lovely spoken rendition of this classic Herbert tale of an alternative culture, 18 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Hellstrom's Hive (MP3 CD)
As per many of his tales - we have the alternative culture living in parallel with our world and how the two cultures compare with each other. In some ways a paeon to past American values of simplicity honesty and plain speaking and a protest against corporate greed and disingenuity

A History of the World in 100 Objects (BBC Audio)
A History of the World in 100 Objects (BBC Audio)
by Neil MacGregor
Edition: Audio CD
Price: £26.00

5.0 out of 5 stars (Audio cd) the objects from the British Museum from various ages..., 18 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Which objects would you pick to tease out our history from the year dot to today? It just makes you wonder as you see all of what humanity gets up to in all its efforts. I did have to refer to the companion entries on the interweb to actually look at all the objects - not always as I imagined from the spoken descriptions.

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War
by Max Brooks
Edition: Audio CD
Price: £10.02

5.0 out of 5 stars (audio cd) Nicely read tale of zombies, 18 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Loved it. I have read the book and liked that too - some bits of the book have been omitted from the audio cd - but it was all nicely told with good clear voices. A "retrospective" of the defeat of the zombies. Would people be that daft really? I am sure they would. You have only to look at the story of the first world war - for the first three years the soldiers were simply incapable of winning because their tactics, skill and equipment were not good enough. So mass fiasco. So yes - humanity could easily go very wrong when faced with a threat.

The Blood Detective (unabridged audio book)
The Blood Detective (unabridged audio book)
by Dan Waddell
Edition: Audio CD

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical/modern detective story very nicely read (audio cd), 18 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I loved the interweaving of a very familiar part of London life past and present with a detective story and the life of a genealogist. Got a bit out of hand at the end and I thought - was that really necessary?

Once More, With Feeling: How we tried to make the greatest porn film ever

3.0 out of 5 stars Well its interesting - tale of the relationship of the odd couple via porn, 18 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Definitely the tale of the relationship between the authors and how they use the stalking horse of the porn movie project to work out their issues by proxy. I lost interest a bit more than half way through as it all started to become seedy - prostitutes and carry on style story boarding. Kept wanting to say - just for goodness sake shag each other please. But nooooo.

Neverwhere
Neverwhere
by Neil Gaiman
Edition: Audio CD

5.0 out of 5 stars (Audio CD) Great speaking voice and sound effects for this standard Gaiman fantasy, 18 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Neverwhere (Audio CD)
All the familiar Gaiman elements are here - characters who are cyphers as opposed to people, the alternative universe in parallel with our world and how they interface - reminds me a lot of American Gods which is very similar. Best read story I have heard for a while.

Story of O, The (Graphic Novel)
Story of O, The (Graphic Novel)
by Pauline Reage
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice take on this classic of eroticism, 15 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Crepax's view on this tale of sadism, masochism and how for love a woman comes to a bad end. No drowning in the pool in this version. It feels very rooted in the 20s, a piece of history.

Market Forces
Market Forces

Price: £13.49

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic tale - a mad max for corporate london, 15 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Market Forces (MP3 CD)
Mad max meets the arbitrageur (Gordon Gekko alike) - grippingly told tale of an England split into the super rich, above the law and the poor - abandoned to rot in squalid shanty towns.
