This review is from: Sketching Country (Hardcover)
This book is packed with pictures of Roland's work. Inspiration for beginners but limited instructions of how to achieve effects. If you need more on this area look at 'Painting Landscapes in Watercolour' by Roland Hilder. Book contains a mixture of sea scapes and land scapes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Steve Hall provides an excellent insight into the work and style of Wesson., 13 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This DVD is for those who wish to develop their own loose 'Wesson' style of painting. Steve provides details of the basics in terms of colours, brushes used and provides tips and hints on how to create simple effects. There is so much to be learned watching an artist such as Steve Hall paint. I can also recommend his DVD Classic Wesson Watercolour. Both are suitable for beginners and for those more experienced who wish to develop a looser style.

4.0 out of 5 stars Steve Hall is a master of Wesson's style of painting, 13 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The DVD illustrates how Wesson achieved his style. It provides instructions for the beginner watercolourist and provides tips and hints on how to achieve particular effects. For those who wish to develop a loose style of painting capturing the 'spirit' of a place and less 'photographic' effect you will gain good experience from this demonstration by Steve Hall.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book for those who appreciate Rowland Hilder's style, 13 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you appreciate Rowland Hilder's style you will love the many illustrations of land and water scapes which will inspire. The accompanying text is well written creating a picture of Rowland's interesting life and development as an artist. It is not a beginners guide to watercolour painting and there are no step by step guides to a finished piece of work. It will help those more experienced artists to experiment and capture something of his unmistakable style. It will also inspire visits to many of his haunts. Also recommended Rowland Hilder 'Sketching Country', Painting Landscapes in Watercolour, and Rowland Hilder's England.

A refreshingly different and unconventional approach to painting with watercolours Colours are vibrant and compositions exciting. If you are looking for inspiration and to work outside the box of most watercolour artists then Shirley is the artist for you. You will get more from this DVD if you purchase the book as well. Her style is impressionistic rather than photographic and probably more suitable for those with some experience of painting. She uses a variety of techniques to achieve different effects, a twig being one of the tools she uses most after her brushes. She has quirky ideas of how she interprets what she sees or wants the viewer to see in her work. For example the perspective might change, the size of an object in relation to another may be different and even the colour will be changed as part of her composition In fact she takes risks and breaks all the rules which put many people off working with watercolours. As with any artist you can take what you want from her philosophy, techniques and make it your own. Also recommended are Taking Risks with Watercolour, book and DVD, Breaking the Rules of Watercolour, book and DVD and the book Vibrant Watercolours.

An excellent informative and inspirational series. Easy to follow instructions to enable the gardener to design and create several cottage garden styles. His love of plants and committment to eco gardening comes across. Lots of useful hints. A greatly missed gardener. Although this series was recorded several years ago it has not dated. A classic for every gardener.
