5.0 out of 5 stars Space 1999 never looked so good, 25 Jun 2013

Watching this great Blu Ray edition feels like seeing Space 1999 for the first time. This cult series had fantastic production values, and this HD transfer enables you to fully appreciate the artistry of the set designers, prop makers, special effects supervisors and model makers who did a remarkable job, which still looks good today. Fortunately, this is presented in the original 4/3 image format, unlike the Thunderbirds BR transfer which cuts the top or the bottom of the frame in order to create a fake 16/9 format. (Thunderbirds would really deserve another BR transfer preserving the original frame format !)
Alas, even the best HD transfer cannot improve the quality of a series' scripts, and some episodes are as dissapointing today as they were when the show was aired in 1976. But there are enough gems in the lot to make this BR set extremely enjoyable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Reframing the images from 4:3 to 16:9 works on some shots, but not on all of them, 28 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As other reviewers of the Blu Ray set, I have mixed feelings about it. Although it is great to see a high definition transfer of this wonderful series, it is almost impossible to avoid noticing that cutting the top and the bottom of the original 4:3 frame to obtain a 16:9 frame is often detrimental to the composition of the shots.

Yes, on some shots like Thunderbird 2 fying it works because you just miss a few clouds, but on others, you clearly feel that the framing is not right and that you are missing elements of the shots.

I think is it sad that this controversial reframing method is not clearly announced. It shows a lack of respect for the customers. I had no idea that the series had been modified that way when I bought the set, because I simply could not imagine anyone treating a cult show like Thunderbirds with so little respect.

The very least would have been to present two versions of the episodes : the full frame original version and the reframed one. As it stands now, I feel cheated because the process shoud have been announced on the cover.
