These should, perhaps, be reviews of the 'product' (HB, PB, Kindle etc.),and not 'learned'(?)reviews of the creative work of Leo Tolstoy. I just want to report that this download is a very acceptable version. There is a good list of Books and Chapters, that enable one to navigate around the novel. The Aylmer and Louise Maude translation is good, with 'on page' translation of the French phrases and verses used by the characters. The Anglicized Russian names (Nicholas, Andrew, Mary etc.) can be glossed over. This is a great 'page turner', so do give it a read. You know you want to!War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy [Annotated]

Somehow you expect a nineteenth century textbook to be archaic, dated, and even virtually unreadable! Be prepared to be happily surprised in this fascinating and inspiring book. It is full of wonderful insights, and is so readable that it is a veritable 'page turner'. This review is of the Kindle version. The text type is modern. Hebrew and Greek words are not accurately reproduced. But you won't regret having this volume in your hand!

There is little one can add to A. Buchan's excellent and helpful review above. An added feature in this edition is the inclusion of twenty one original illustrations, with what are believed to be Bunyan's own four line verses. Christian in puritan costume adds to the period feel of this edition, of what is a timeless spiritual classic. The Scripture references, left out of modern versions, are here included.
All in all, this nicely priced Oxford World's Classics edition makes this work a Progress worth taking!

Paradise Lost (Oxford World's Classics)

Many people have a 'Greatest Books I've Never Read' List. Included on that list could well be Milton's great work.

There is no doubt that it can be daunting to see those pages of finely printed epic poetry, scattered with 17th Century word usage and Classical, Mythological and Biblical allusions.

We may even have started on Book 1, and 'fallen at the first fence', never to rise and canter on! What is needed is a clearly printed version, with helpful introduction, and (most importantly) copious on-page footnotes to enlighten and instruct. This is just such a version, and can be highly recommended.

Tick this classic text off your List! Milton, you can be living at this hour!
